Launched in 2363, the Enterprise-D was the flagship of the Federation. The ship was captained by Jean-Luc Picard and had a crew of 1,012 officers and civilians. The Enterprise was one of the most advanced ships in the fleet at the time and one of the largest. While the ship was heavily armed, it was a ship of peace and exploration. Thus, there were several civilians (scientists, researchers) and families on board - even children. As the ship was known to put itself in harms way and possibly endanger the familes on board, the ship was able to provide a safeguard in the event of an emergency. The galaxy-class ships were capable of saucer seperation, so the Enterprise could detach into two functioning ships. The saucer section, which housed the majority of crew quarters and the families, could stay at a safe distance and travel to safety by way of its two impulse engines. The stardrive section, with the warp drive, photon torpedoes and a battle bridge, could take a defensive stance.

The Enterprise-D was the first Starfleet vessel to encounter several entities and life forms, from the Q to the Borg. The Enterprise was targeted by the Borg when they sought to assimilate earth in 2367, and Captain Picard was taken and assimilated. Riker was given command of the ship and stopped the Borg from threatening earth. Picard was recovered and took command once again. Command of the ship was temporarily given to Edward Jellico when Picard was sent on a covert mission involving the Cardassians. But again, Picard assumed command once the mission was over.

The Enterprise-D responded to a distress signal from the Armagosa observatory in 2371 when they became entangled in a plot to destroy a star and wipe out a civilization by a crazed scientist named Soran and the Klingons he hired for transport and protection. The Enterprise-D hurried to the Veridian system where it was attacked by a Klingon bird-of-prey and was heavily damaged. The Enterprise's warp core was set to breach and the crew evacuated into the saucer to escape. The saucer was pushed into the atmosphere of Veridian III when the stardrive section exploded, and the saucer crashed on the planet surface. Casualties were light, but the ship itself could not be salvaged.
