Captain Jean-Luc Picard
Commanding Officer
Born and raised in France on earth, Picard was the first to take command of the Enterprise-D. Picard had a long career in Starfleet filled with drama. When he was an ensign, Picard was attacked by Naussicans and almost died; he was fitted with an artifical heart. When Picard was an officer on board the U.S.S. Stargazer, he was forced to take command of the ship during a battle with the Ferengi. He was promoted to Captain of the Stargazer following his bravery. During his time on the ship, he got to know Jack and Beverly Crusher; however, he had to send Jack to his death. Years later, Picard was given command of the new Enterprise-D and was reunited with Beverly, whom he had developed feelings for over the years. Picard faced many challenges while on the Enterprise-D, including first contact with Q and the Borg, assimilation by the race, reassignment for an undercover mission to Cardassia (resulting in his capture), and involvement in several conspiracies among races. Picard was facing the death of his brother and nephew, as well as villian Soran on Veridian III when the Enterprise crashed.
Commander William T. Riker
First Officer
Alaskan-raised Will Riker became the young first officer of the Enterprise-D. Riker rendezvoused with the Enterprise at Farpoint station after transferring from the U.S.S. Hood where he had spent several years of his career. Before then, he served as a junior officer on the U.S.S. Pegasus and was involved in a crew mutiny after the ship was experimenting with an illegal cloaking device; and the U.S.S. Potemkin where a transporter accident creating a clone of himself who was left behind on a planet surface for several years before being rescued. Riker had an affair with future-Enterprise counselor Deanna Troi while on Betazed and the two shared a deep bond which was still resonating during their time together on the Enterprise. Riker temporarily took command of the Enterprise after Picard was assimilated by the Borg. It was Riker who had to defend earth and develop new tactical strategies that the Borg could not expect or adapt to easily. Riker was in command of the Enterprise-D when the ship was attacked by the Duras sisters at Veridian III and the saucer section made a crash landing on the planet surface.
Commander Beverly Crusher, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer
Beverly boarded the Enterprise at Farpoint station with son Wesley in tow. Beverly was left a single mother after husband Jack was killed while on board the U.S.S. Stargazer under Picard's command. Beverly spent a year on the Enterprise after the ship was launched, but took a transfer to head Starfleet Medical. A year later she was yearning to return to the Enterprise and so returned, and was reunited with Wesley and Picard. Beverly was responsible for several medical breakthroughs, such as the microsurgery on Picard's body after he had been assimilated by the Borg and the cloning and implantation of a new spinal cord for Lieutenant Worf. Beverly had many interests and hobbies, including dancing and theatre. She also had an interest in command and was given command of the Enterprise on more than one occassion.
Commander Deanna Troi
Ship's Counselor
Deanna Troi's heritage plays an important role in her work as counselor. Born to a Human Starfleet officer and his Betazoid wife (an heir to the holy rings of Betazed), Deanna has some of the Betazoid telepathic ability. Though she cannot read minds, she has a psychic sense of emotions from people she encounters. Deanna studied psychology on Betazed before joining Starfleet, and she met and fell in love with a young Will Riker. Deanna met up with him two years later when she was posted to the Enterprise-D. Troi found her senses to be very useful to her crew and to Picard, when dealing with alien races and unknown territory. She found herself involved with several alien species, from an alien race that impregnated her to the Romulan Tal'Shiar to a close bond and quickly-romantic relationship to Lieutenant Worf. Deanna took the Commander's test to become a real bridge officer, and was even piloting the Enterprise when the ship was damaged and pushed into the atmosphere of Veridian III.
Lieutenant Commander Data
Second Officer, Operations Manager
Data is the only artificial lifeform serving in Starfleet. Data is an android that was built by Noonian Soongh on Omicron Theta, and later abandonded. Data was found by a team of Starfleet officers who studied him. Data was allowed to enter the Academy and become an officer. Data was stationed on several ships including the Trieste before becoming the Ops officer on board the new Enterprise-D. Data has been on a quest to understand humanity and come as close to human as possible. He has experimented with art, humor, music, theatre, romance and has developed great friendships especially with Geordi LaForge. He became caretaker to his pet cat, Spot, and even tried to reproduce by creating another android named Lal (she later overloaded and deactivated). He also was lured to Dr. Soongh so that he could be given an emotions chip, but identical android Lore killed Soongh and took the chip for himself. Data finally retrieved the chip and waited over a year before finally implanting it, but the chip overloaded and fused to his positronic net.
Lieutenant Commander Geordi LaForge
Chief Engineer
Geordi has overcome great challenges to get to where he is today. Geordi was blind at birth, but given the opportunity to see by using a visor which transmits information to his brain and allows him to see, but in a very unique way that is unlike normal human sight. Geordi was assigned to the U.S.S. Aries before joining the Enterprise at Farpoint station as a junior-grade lieutenant. Geordi served as helm officer during his first year aboard, but was later promoted to chief engineer and taken off the bridge down to engineering. Geordi's engineering skills came in handy especially when dealing with android friend Data, who required Geordi's help in maintenance. Geordi's visor became his enemy when he was captured by Soran; a camera and transmitter were placed in his visor which allowed Soran and the Duras sisters to see everything he sees. As a result, the Duras sisters obtained the Enterprise's shield modulation frequency and launched an assault of the ship.
Lieutenant Commander Worf
Tactical Officer, Chief of Security
Worf is the first and only Klingon to ever serve in Starfleet. Born to Klingon parents who were killed at Khitomer, Worf was raised on earth by human parents and was encouraged to join Starfleet. For this reason many considered Worf to be less of a warrior. Worf was assigned to the Enterprise as a junior-grade lieutenant and worked in several different posts, including helm and operations. He also worked closely with Lieutenant Yar. After her death, Worf was promoted to her post as tactical officer. Worf met Federation ambassador K'ehlyr and the two became mates; they had one son, Alexander. When K'ehlyr was murdered by Duras, Worf took vengeance by killing him. He sent Alexander to live with his parents but he later returned to live with his father on the Enterprise. Worf became close with counselor Troi and the two almost became romantically involved but it was short-lived.
Lieutenant Ro Laren
Helm Officer
Ro Laren was raised in Bajoran refugee camps after her father was killed by the Cardassians when she was only seven. Ro joined Starfleet and found herself in trouble when the members of an away team were killed. Ro was sent to a Federation prison where she served until Starfleet pulled her out for an assignment. Ro was assigned to the Enterprise to help Picard with the Bajorans. After the assignment ended, Picard asked Ro to stay aboard and she agreed. Ensign Ro was assigned to the helm where she served until she left the Enterprise for advanced tactical training. A newly promoted Lt. Ro returned to the Enterprise a year later, and was immediately thrown into a plan involving the Maquis. Ro went undercover as a renegade Starfleet officer who abandoned her crew in search of the Maquis. She became close to one of their Bajoran leaders and she sympathized with their cause. Ro abandoned her Starfleet commission to stay with them.
Guinan
Civilian, Bartender
The old and mysterious Guinan led an interesting life before joining the Enterprise-D as a bartender in Ten-Forward. An El-Aurian, she is several hundred years old and traveled to earth as early as the late 19th century. It is during this time that she met up with Data and Picard, who had traveled back in time from the 24th century's Enterprise. Guinan was injured and Picard stayed back in the 19th century to care for her befor returning to his future timeline. Guinan did more travelling over the next hundreds of years but found herself aboard one of 2 transport ship carrying El-Aurian refugees to earth in 2393. The ships encountered the Nexus and became trapped. They were rescued by the Enterprise-B and Guinan and the refugees (including Soran) were taken aboard. Guinan later surfaced over 70 years later on the Enterprise-D with Picard, as a bartender. Guinan had an ear to lend and advice to give to the crew, and was often a great source of information. Guinan had previous encounters with Q and the Borg and were helpful to Picard.
Ensign Wesley Crusher
Helm Officer
Wesley came aboard the new Enterprise-D with his mother, Dr. Beverly Crusher. Wesley was extremely bright and curious, often leading him to trouble with Picard and the Starfleet officers who ignored his potential and thought that he was just in the way. Picard, who did not like children, had a particularly hard time adjusting to Wesley's presence on the ship. Wesley proved to be helpful to the ship and so Picard reluctantly promoted him to acting ensign so that he would be permitted on the bridge and other areas of the ship. Wesley eventually took over the helm position after Geordi left for engineering. Wesley looked up to many officers of the crew and found Picard to be a role model. Wesley applied to Starfleet Academy more than once, but when he was accepted he was willing to give up his chance in order to remain on the Enterprise to help save a missing Troi and Riker. Less than a year later, a space opened up and Wesley was offered the spot. He left the Enterprise for the Academy but returned more than once. He finally abandoned Starfleet to travel the universe with the Traveler.
Lieutenant Tasha Yar
Tactical Officer, Chief of Security
Lieutenant Yar was the first tactical/security officer of the Enterprise. She was raised on Turkana IV, left to care for her sister Ishara when their parents were killed. Tasha led a rough life as a child and adolescent and was eager to escape Turkana. She joined Starfleet to get away from the rape gangs and violence on the planet. Tasha was assigned to the Enterprise-D under Picard's command. She served with the crew for less than a year before losing her life to a unique alien entity on Vagra II when Counselor Troi's shuttle crashed on the planet.
Commander Katherine Pulaski, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Pulaski transferred from the Repulse to the Enterprise after Beverly Crusher left the ship for Starfleet Medical. Pulaski had a very different personality and attitude than Crusher and she often clashed with Picard on issues. Pulaski took up an interest in Data although she had a very difficult time thinking of him as more than just a machine or tool. Pulaski joined Geordi and Data in their Sherlock Holmes mysteries which led her to be captured by the super-hologram Moriarty. Pulaski also discovered an unusual rapid aging disease that infected an outpost and the Starship Lantree. Pulaski left the vessel after a year, when Dr. Crusher returned.
