Captain James T. Kirk
Commanding Officer
Kirk was demoted from Admiral to Captain and assigned to command his crew under the new Enterprise-A. Kirk was called into action when the Enterprise was sent to Nimbus III. Kirk faced trouble when Sybok took control of the ship and it was up to Kirk and his closest friends, Spock and McCoy, to save the ship and the crew. Kirk was placed in a very uncomfortable situation when he was faced with a diplomatic mission to establish peace with his enemies the Klingons. Kirk was framed for murder of the Klingon chancellor but solved the mystery and brought the conspirators to justice, while also preventing a disaster at Khitomer and allowing peace with the Klingons to move forward. Kirk retired from Starfleet but returned for the maiden voyage of the Enterprise-B. Kirk was pronounced missing and dead when the ship was damaged but he survived in the Nexus only to be met by Jean-Luc Picard.
Captain Spock
First Officer, Science Officer
Although Spock retained the rank of Captain, he decided to remain on board the Enterprise under Kirk's command. Spock faced a page from his past when his half-brother Sybok hyjacked the ship and headed for the galactic barrier. Spock was able to negotiate with Klingons and save Kirk from death on a planet near the barrier. Spock had other connections to the Klingons when he established talks with the Klingon chancellor Gorkon to work out a peace treaty. Spock had to take command of the Enterprise when Kirk was framed for murder but he was able to rescue the Captain and McCoy and also bring the conspirators (including his protege' Valeris) to justice. Spock became an Ambassador for Starfleet in his later years and was uncovered on Romulus decades later. While he is half-Human and half-Vulcan he seems to supress his emotions.
Captain Hikaru Sulu
Helm Officer, Commanding Officer U.S.S. Excelsior
Sulu served as the Enterprise-A's helm officer during their mission to Nimbus III. He was also a primary shuttle pilot for the mission. Sulu became influenced by Sybok and became under his control, providing Sybok with the ability to control the ship and reach the galactic barrier. A couple of years after the incident, Sulu left the ship when he was promoted to Captain and given command of his dream ship - the U.S.S. Excelsior. Sulu wasn't finished with the Enterprise yet though, as he helped his former crewmates stop the assassination plot at Khitomer. Sulu's daughter followed in her father's footsteps as she was the helm officer of the Enterprise-B.
Captain Montgomery Scott
Chief Engineer
Despite his prior promotion as Captain of Engineering on the U.S.S. Excelsior, Scotty decided to remain on board the Enterprise-A with his crewmates. Scotty was given the dreadful task of repairing many of the new ship's systems after they started to malfunction shortly after launch. The crew was even sent on shore leave as he and his teams tried to get the ship operational. Scotty was aboard the Enterprise when the ship was sent on its mission to escort the Klingons to earth. He helped the crew try and find the conspirators who were aboard the ship, and he also had to keep the ship together when it was under attack by General Chang and a prototype bird-of-prey. Captain Scott retired from Starfleet and was aboard the Enterprise-B when Kirk was "killed." Scotty then took off on the U.S.S. Jenolen when the ship encountered a dyson sphere and crashed. Scotty put himself in the transporter until he was finally rescued by the Enterprise-D over 75 years later.
Commander Leonard 'Bones' McCoy, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer
McCoy continued his grouchy bedside manner aboard the Enterprise-A, working with Kirk and Spock to defeat Sybok and save the ship. McCoy also became involved in the Klingon peace conspiracy when he tried to save a mortally wounded chancellor. He and Kirk were framed for murder and sentenced to a prison camp. The two escaped and were rescued by the Enterprise. McCoy later helped Spock modify a torpedo to destroy Chang's bird-of-prey. It is unknown what McCoy did after the Enterprise-A was decommissioned but he held the rank of Admiral and was still alive when the Enterprise-D launched in 2363.
Commander Uhura
Communications Officer
Uhura continued her duties as Communications officer on board the new Enterprise-A under Captain Kirk's command. She remained on board the Enterprise during the ship's shakedown and repairs but had to recall the key personnel to the ship at the last minute, which required her communications skills. She played a role in the away team on Nimbus III, putting her sexuality and vocal talent at her advantage. She did, however, become under the influence of Sybok. Uhura was later pulled out of a seminar at Starfleet Academy in order to join the Enterprise-A on their mission with the Klingons and had to help get the Enterprise past Klingon listening posts without being detected.
Commander Pavel Chekov
Navigational Officer, Security Chief
The Russian served as the Enterprise's navigational officer as well as worked closely with ship's security as he had on the previous Enterprise. Chekov had the ability to flex his command skills and his acting chops by assuming command of the ship and keeping Sybok occupied while Kirk and his away team stormed Nimbus III. He also involved himself in the investigation as to who was responsible for the attack on Gorkon 1 and the murder of the chanellor. Chekov discovered the blood left behind on the Enterprise transporter pad. Chekov attended the launch of the Enterprise-B and helped the El-Aurian refugees.
Lieutenant Valeris
Helm Officer
The Vulcan protege' of Spock, Valeris became the first of her species to graduate at the top of her class from the Academy. Valeris volunteered to replace Sulu as helmsman of the Enterprise-A when the ship was ordered to meet up with the Klingon chancellor. Spock had intended for Valeris to succeed him on the Enterprise after he stood down, but he was unaware that she had other plans. Valeris was working with a group of Starfleet and Klingon conspirators who were working to stop the peace process between the warring races. Kirk and the crew caught her red handed and she was forced to confess to the act and to indite the rest of the conspiracy.
