Ó Caoláin is a member of the Sinn Féin Ard Comhairle (National Executive) and an elected public representative
on Monaghan County Council and Monaghan Urban District Council. He topped the poll for Sinn Féin in Cavan/Monaghan
in the 1997 elections, marking a breakthrough for Sinn Féin support in the 26 southern counties of Ireland.
Centrally involved in Sinn Féin's development of its peace strategy, Mr. O'Caolaín has been a
key figure in his parties efforts to inform and involve both US public opinion and the Washington Administration
in the search for a solution to the conflict in Ireland. He was also a leading member of the Irish Forum
for Peace and Reconciliation.
A frequent visitor to the United States, Mr. O'Caolaín was a member
of the Sinn Féin delegation that attended the Washington Conference for Trade and Investment on Northern
Ireland and Border Counties.
Married with four children, prior to his taking up of a full-time
position with Sinn Féin in 1982, Mr. O'Caolaín was employed in banking in Ireland
