Dessie Ellis
Dublin North West
Dessie Ellis
was reared in the Dunsink Road area of Finglas, where he still runs his TV repair business. He
was elected Union shop steward in his previous job. He has always been active in the community, having
played for local football teams and gave Karate training to many local people. Dessie has been actively
involved in the community's fight against 'joy-riding', drug pushing and gangsterism. He has
helped residents organise public meetings where local people put their views to politicians, Gardai
and Corporation officials. He actively assisted the setting up of Residents' Committees and has given
practical advice and support to those courageous residents who have stood up against intimidation.
Since his election as Councillor, Dessie has been very active on an almost full-time basis, dealting
with over 400 cases including housing, rents, social welfare, pensions and anti-social behaviour. He
has campaigned on issues such as bin charges, the state of the roads, buses, and the regeneration of
Finglas and Ballymun.
His success can be gauged by the fact that the FF/PD government is now beginning
to pour funding into this previously neglected constituency as a response to Sinn Féin's growing popularity.
