| Winter Island |
| After leaving Little Garden, Nami feels very tired. Vivi discovers that she has a very high fever and her life is in danger. Everyone on the ship is extremely worried about Nami, but Nami insists that she is fine and they must reach Alabasta as soon as possible. Even in her condition, she manages to predict a ferocious typhoon and helps steer the ship away from danger. However her body is very weak and she is soon bed-ridden. Vivi says that they need to get to Alabasta fast, but first the important thing is taking Nami to a doctor. They sail to look for any islands where Nami could be cured. Halfway through the journey, they encounter a ship led by Vapol. He attacks them and tries to eat their ship. Vapol is a man with the powers of a Devil Fruit, which enables him to eat anything. Luffy is angry and hits him away. After a while, they sail to an island, which is a Winter Island on Grand Line. As they arrive at the island, they are attacked by the villagers of the island, telling pirates to get lost. Vivi is shot. However, she falls to her knees and begs them to let them see a doctor. Luffy too, does the same and asks for help. The leader of the villagers, Mr. Dalton, agrees to help them and lets them come on land. Zoro and Carr stays at the ship and Zoro decides to train his muscles. Mr Dalton takes them to a village called Big Horn. There, he tells them that the only doctor left on the island is a woman known as Dr. Kureha, she is nicknamed �The Witch� by the villagers. This is because many people have seen her coming down from the mountain where she dwells in a sleigh pulled by a monster. Dr Kureha is an unliscensed doctor and comes down to the village to cure people and take their belongings in exchange only when she feels like it. Luffy cannot wait for her to come down and decides to carry Nami up the mountain to find the doctor. Sanji wants to go along as well. They set off to climb the mountain and are warned about Rapans, fierce rabbits that dwell on the mountains. After they had left, Mr Dalton tells Vivi and Usopp that this country had onced been attacked by pirates � the Black Beard Pirates Group, which only consisted of 5 people. They had previously been ruled by a man named King Vapol. Usopp and Vivi recognnize him as the same Vapol which had attacked their ship earlier. Vapol had been an evil and foolish ruler. He had expelled all the doctors on the island and took the best 20 doctors in the country to serve him especially. They are known as �Doctor 20�. However, when the Black Beard pirates attacked the island, Vapol and his men had immediately fled. Dalton also reveals that he was once Head of Security serving Vapol, but could not bear his ways. Then, a woman comes by and tells them that Dr Kureha has come down from the mountain and is in the next village. They immediately set off to look for Dr Kureha. Meanwhile on the mountain, Luffy and Sanji encounter the Rapans. Sanji tells Luffy not to attack as his movements will affect the sick Nami. The Rapans attack Luffy and Sanji, and they try to run away. Back in the village, Usopp and Vivi had just missed Dr Kureha as she had already left the village. At that moment, someone comes running to the village and tells Mr Dalton that Vapol has returned. Alarmed, Dalton rushes off the stop Vapol. Usopp and Vivi try to find their way to the next village, but get lost. Mr Dalton confronts Vapol and tries to stop him from reclaiming the country, but Vapol defeats him. He heads back to his castle on the mountains to reclaim it and also to kill Luffy. The Rapans are angry that they are unable to defeat Luffy and they start an avalanche. Sanji sacrifices himself in order to save Nami and Luffy. The avalanche hits the surrounding villages as well, including Big Horn. Usopp and Vivi are also struck by the avalanche and encounter Zoro on the way. They make their way back to Big Horn where Vapol�s soldiers are preventing the villagers from saving Dalton. Zoro defeats the soldiers and takes their clothes. The villagers hurry to rescue Dalton and finds him buried under the snow. Luffy sets Nami down and goes to find Sanji. He manages to find him and continues on his way carrying both a sick Nami and a badly injured and unconscious Sanji. He sees a baby Rapan crying for its mother who is buried under the snow, and he saves the Rapan. On the way, he is blocked by Vapol who has caught up. As he cannot attack while carrying Nami, the Rapans come to his rescue, in appreciation for him saving them. Luffy is thankful for their help and continues to the mountain. After a long and exhausting climb, he finally gets to reach the top. As he gets there, he passes out, but is saved by a monster. Dr Kureha comes out and he tells her to save them � they are his �Nakama.� She assures him that she will surely save them. |
| Nami regains consciousness and is told that she had contracted a deadly disease which had been extinct a long time ago. If she had not been treated soon, she would have been dead in two days time. Sanji and Luffy had also undergone treatment for their wounds. Dr Kureha reveals that her assistant, the �monster�, is Tony Tony Chopper, a blue-nosed reindeer, who has inherited all her doctoring skills.
