Mr and Mrs James Whitton arrived in Canada from England about the year 1839, and settled in Glenburnie, near Kingston. They came to Seymour about 1849 and kept what they called "Whitton's Inn" on the farm of the late Andrew Watson, now owned by
Mr and Mrs John A Murray. Shortly after this they moved to the farm betwen the 6th and 7th concession. The house was rough cast, three storey, with an underground basement, used for a summer kitchen, and also a room for a cheese vat where Mrs
Whitton, along with a Miss Bradgley, made the first cheese made in Northumberland County. The cheese grew in popularity and a group of investors headed by Mr Whitton, William Hume, and James Clough, with Mrs Whitton as the managing director,
formed a company and moved the cheesmaking operation to a small factory which was called the Burnbrae Cheese Factory. The factory expanded to Hastings County and a new factory was built at Wellman's Corners and James Whitton Jr. was named the
first manager of that factory. The cheese business fell on hard times and couldn't secure a constant source of milk supply at a price that would allow them to be profitable so the operation was discontinued. Mrs Whitton continued to produce a
fine brand of cheese in the basement vats until 1880 when the Wellman's Corners factory reopened. James Whitton Jr. was secured as head cheesemaker. He later went on to become the Dairy Instructor for the Ontario Department of Agriculture.
Cheese from this factory won many provincial and National awards. One such award was a gold capped and engraved ebony walking stick which is still in the possession of the Whitton family at the home of James Whitton in Euphrasia Township.
About 1883 Mr Whitton sold his farm to the late John Glassford, of Kingston, and moved to Campellford. Part of the family received their education in a log school, situated at the east corner below Burnbrae Church, on the north side of the
road. The rest of the family were educated at the old stone school in Burnbrae, between the sixth and seventh concessions. This school was later burned down. Mr and Mrs Whitton were apparently swindled out of the first farm they bought after
landing in Canada. There is some confusion as to whether that farm was near Kingston or in Quebec.1 HEAL --Other Fields 1 HEAL _FA1: Date: NOV 1887 Place: Buried @ Burnbrae\St Andrews Presb. Church Cem. Seymour Twp. Northumberland Co.
