Earl was a linesman for Bell Telephone for many years and worked in various communities around Ontario as Bell expanded their service. The family heritage of farming was ingrained in him and after his marriage to Eleanor in the dirty thirties he returned to the farm. He rented the former Petch farm, which had been taken over by Sheridan Nurseries on the Town Line. I believe this comprised some 12-15 acres. Father had for some years been renting twenty acres from the E.T. Stephens farm which ran from Lakeshore Highway north to the Lower Middle Road. He grew potatoes mostly on this acreage. These were planted by ploughing a furrow, dropping the cut potatoes at proper spacing, then ploughing the soil back over them. We always hoed them several times during the season. They were harvested by digging with a fork and picking up by hand into bushel baskets. Earl and father would dig, Ross and I would pick up. We did this for 8-10 hours a day for days on end. The sand would be so hot that we could not stand it in bare feet sometimes. How Earl and father were able to do this back breaking work constantly is a tribute to their strength and stamina. Of course, the load of potatoes had to be taken to the Toronto market in the evening. We cooperated with Earl in the working of his land and ours. We grew mostly potatoes, corn and tomatoes on the Stephens and Earl's property. Berries and root crops were grown on our home farm. We pastured our two cows on the Stephen's land and went over there to milk them. We cut whatever hay we needed from that land and picked apples from trees that survived randomly from former activities. There was usually several hundred bushels of good apples to pick. Earl bought a twelve acre farm on Haynes Road in Dixie about 1940. He drove an oil delivery truck for Texaco out of Port Credit in the winter months, finally devoting fulltime to this job. He sold the farm in the 1970's and moved to a house on Sierra Drive in Dixie.
