The summer crowds of pickers were looked after and fed by my mother. This was on top of her helping to pick or pack berries and whatever else she could manage. I believe my mother qualified for Sainthood. One has to realize we had no indoor plumbing, a wood cookstove, no icebox or any other convenience. Father went to Oakville for fresh meat and supplies everyday. Perhaps, I was too young to ever remember her to complain.
To me this was a very exciting time. Lots of people around and they were on the whole, happy, constantly teasing one another, even in a festive mood. I was too young to connect this load with the bouts of severe illness that mother used to have. In my early years, mother would have days when she wretched all day and I was sure she was going to die. She spent considerable time in Hamilton Hospital in the years after my birth. Diagnosed as gall bladder trouble, kidney problems, and a variety of other suspected problems, she died at 82 without ever knowing for certain what caused her recurring trials for so many years. I do not recall anyone suggesting perhaps it was over work

He was Methodist, 28 years 6 mosold at the time of enlistment, 5 ft 2.5 in tall, with fair complexion,brown eyes and hair, weight 150 lbs. He had "L.A.C." tatooed on his leftforearm and a birthmark on his neck. He had 4 children, Stanley Hector, 7yrs; Dorothy May 5 yrs; Roy William 3 yrs, and Wilbert 7 mos. His father,William Leaver, was alive, living in Oakville, and his mother wasdeceased. He enlisted as a private # 2498961 in the 164th BN. Aftertraining he embarked from Halifax aboard the SS "Carpathia" 11 Apr 1917and arrived in England 22 Apr 1917. He was transferred to the 2nd Res Bnat E. Sandling 23 Apr 1917. On 27 May 1917 he went to the 164th CanadianInfantry BN at Witely Camp. On 8 Mar 1918 he was transferred to theCanadian Machine Gun Depot at Seaford, and then on 27 Mar 1918 theMachine Gun Pool Overseas. By 31 Mar 1918 he was in France with the 2ndBN CMGC. On 24 Jan 1919 he was given 2 weeks leave in England. On 12 Apr1919 he was transferred back to Witely,England from Le Havre, France andembarked for Canada aboard the "Minnekahda" 14 May 1919, arriving 23 May1919. He was discharged from the service at Toronto 25 May 1919. Heassigned $20 a month from his pay to his wife while in the service.
