Aunt Annie and her husband lived in Rodney, Ontario which is west of London. They farmed there I believe. My only recollection of them was at a very young age I was taken there for Uncle Dave's funeral. The body was in a casket at their home, as was the custom in those days. They held a 'wake' the night before the funeral. There was much consuming of achololic beverages, tales of bygone exploits, toasting of the deceased and at one point the casket was propped up against the wall and drinks offered to the lips of the corpse

The summer crowds of pickers were looked after and fed by my mother. This was on top of her helping to pick or pack berries and whatever else she could manage. I believe my mother qualified for Sainthood. One has to realize we had no indoor plumbing, a wood cookstove, no icebox or any other convenience. Father went to Oakville for fresh meat and supplies everyday. Perhaps, I was too young to ever remember her to complain.

To me this was a very exciting time. Lots of people around and they were on the whole, happy, constantly teasing one another, even in a festive mood. I was too young to connect this load with the bouts of severe illness that mother used to have. In my early years, mother would have days when she wretched all day and I was sure she was going to die. She spent considerable time in Hamilton Hospital in the years after my birth. Diagnosed as gall bladder trouble, kidney problems, and a variety of other suspected problems, she died at 82 without ever knowing for certain what caused her recurring trials for so many years. I do not recall anyone suggesting perhaps it was over work

She had the following children:

  M i Earle Gladstone LEAVER
  F ii Audrey Eileen LEAVER
  M iii Rosseau Kitchener LEAVER
  M iv Donald Elmore LEAVER
