William had always worked on the land. He and his family were working on the Isle of Wight from where they left for Canada in October of 1882. I have been told that they were first in Northern Ontario, but the winter was so severe that they sledged south. I have no record of the journey or how he wound up on the Town Line, Oakville, working on the farm of a Mr. Robinson. This property was on the corner of the Lakeshore Highway and the then Town Line, currently renamed Winston Churchill Boulevard. This property is now owned by the Ontario Hydro. They lived in a small frame house on the edge of the road just north of the highway. It was demolished in the late 1970's. Here they raised the remaining six of nine children. My father Alfred Samuel was the sixth, born in England and brought to Canada at six months old, in 1882.
The whole family were very active in St. John's in Oakville, which was a Methodist church at the time. They would walk into church for Sunday School in the morning, home for lunch, then walk back for evening services. The distance was some three miles or more. It was said that the Robinsons, who drove a buggy to church, would sometimes pick up Mrs. Leaver if the weather was bad, but the kids and William had to walk.
After many years with Robinsons, William was able to accumulate enough money to buy a house and six acres on the Town Line north of where they were living. They moved there in the early 1900s. His wife Jane died there in 1914.
William Henry eventually moved to the Upper Middle Road in Oakville to live with his son, Herbert.
Later Herbert and William returned to the robinson Farm, after Mr. Robinson died, and rented the farm they had started out on. William died there in 1936
