According to Service records obtained from The National Archives ofCanada,Ottawa (RG 150 accession 1992-93/166 Reg # 663499 Box # 3021.49)Emerson Earl Featherstone enlisted in the Canadian army at Oakville, ONon 26 Feb 1916. His Attestation paper stated that he was born in Milton 5Sep 1894; his parents were Wm. & Bessie Featherstone, living in Oakville.Emerson was a farmer, Methodist, single, 19 1/2 yrs old, 5 ft. 9 in.tall, 175 lbs.,with fair hair and complexion, and blue eyes. He enlistedin the 164th Overseas Bn. as a private, regimental # 663499. He stayedwith this Bn until 2 Apr 1917.
Due to recurring pain in the abdomen since 1914, he went to the HamiltonCity Hospital on 20 Feb. 1917 for a cholecystectomy (gall stones) andappendectomy at his own expense. He developed pnemonia while recoveringin the hospital. In June he had a relapse and was operated on at the endof June for a lung abscess, at the same hospital. He convalesed at homeunder the care of his sister, a nurse. Although he made a good recovery,he had a partial loss of function in the right lung, and a medical reviewon 1 Nov 1917 recommended he be discharged as physically unfit. Thedischarge took effect 31 Dec 1917 in Toronto, ON. A DVA deathnotification records the date of death as 4 Jul 1979, possibly inHamilton, ON.
