According to Service Records obtained from The National Archives ofCanada in Ottawa( RG 150 accession 1992-93/166 Reg # 135181 Box #5492.44), Charles Henry Leaver enlisted in the Canadian Army at Niagara 5Aug 1915. His Attestation paper indicates he was born in Oakville, ON, 6Oct 1892. His next-of-kin was his mother, Helen Leaver, living inOakville. This is a clerical error, since his service will in his ownhand refers to her as Mrs. Ellen Leaver. He was single, Church ofEngland, a butcher by trade, 5 ft. 7 in tall with light brown hair, faircomplexion, and blue eyes. He weighed 160 Lbs and had a mole on the rightside of his neck. He was accepted as a private #135181 into the 74th BN.While in Canada he was promoted to corporal 9 Aug 1915, and to sergeant 1Dec 1915. After training he embarked from Halifax aboard the H.M.T"Empress of Britain" 29 Mar 1916 and arrived in Liverpool 9 Apr 1916. On18 Apr 1916 he went on the Aldershot rifle course at Bramshott. On 9 Jun1916 he was confirmed in the rank of sergeant and arrived in France. Hewas transferred to the 52nd BN and was in the field by 12 Jun 1916. On18 Aug 1916 he was diagnosed with diptheria. By 22 Aug 1916 he was in No.14 Stationary Hospital at Boulogne, then sent to Edmonton MilitaryHospital in Shoreham, England 27 Sep 1916 suffering post diptheriaparalysis. On 23 Oct 1916 he was in the Canadian Division ConvalescentHospital at Woodcote Park, Epsom. On 17 Nov 1916 he was discharged to theCommand Depot at Shoreham. On 27 Feb 1917 he was appointed Acting CompanySergeant Major (CSM) while employed on permanent cadre. On 10 Mar 1917 hewas transferred to 1st Coy of the Manitoba Regiment at Dibgate. On 29 Oct1917, he reverted to the rank of sergeant when he was no longer employedwith the permanent cadre. By the 19 Aug 1918, he was back in England, andwent to the Nell Lane Military Hospital in West Dibsbury, Manchester.After infection set in, it was necessary to amputate the finger on 28 Nov1918. On 5 Dec 1918 he was transferred to the Military ConvalescentHospital, Woodcote Park, Epsom and given a week's leave. He was in Epsomby 17 Dec 1918 and was discharged 7 Feb 1919. On 19 Feb 1919 he wastransferred to the 18th Res Bn at Seaford, and on 7 Mar 1919 went back to52nd BN. On the 17 Mar 1919 he embarked on the "SS Olympic" atSouthampton to return to Canada, arriving 26 Mar 1919. On 14 Jan 1919 hewas awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for gallantry in thefield and distinguished service in the rank of sergeant. He wasdischarged 31 Mar 1919 at Port Arthur, ON. During his time in the servicehe assigned $20 to $25 of his pay each month to his mother. According tohis DVA death notification, he died 18 Dec 1978, possibly in Toronto.

On 21 Dec 1916, he was promoted toActing Corporal at Witely, England. On 9 March 1917 he embarked forFrance, and disembarked the next day at Boulogne. His promotion tocorporal was confirmed on arrival. On 26 Jan 1918 he received 2 weeksleave in England and returned to duty on 10 Feb 1918. On 24 May 1918, hewas promoted to Seargeant, and on 30 May 1918 he was transferred to the8th Bn Canadian Engineers. On 1 Jan 1919 he got 2 weeks leave in France,returning 25 Jan 1919. He returned to England 16 Feb 1919. On 19 Mar1919, he left Bramshott, England to embark on the HMS "Cedric" forCanada. He arrived 27 Mar 1919, and was discharged in Toronto on 30 Mar1919. He assigned $20 a month of his pay to his mother in Oakville.
