According to Service Records obtained from The National Archives ofCanada in Ottawa( RG 150 accession 1992-93/166 Reg # 663398 Box #7901.32), Ernest Albert Pope enlisted in the Canadian Army at Oakville,ON 1 Feb 1916. His Attestation paper stated that his address wasOakville, Trafalgar Tp., his next-of-kin was his mother, Emily Pope,living in Oakville, ON, his birthdate was 27 Mar 1895, his occupation,afarmer, Church of England, and he was unmarried. Physically he was 5 ft.2 in. tall, 125 lbs, with a dark complexion, dark brown hair, and browneyes. He was accepted into the 164 Bn with the rank of private # 663398.After training, he embarked for England 5 Apr 1917 aboard the "SSCarpathia". He arrived 22 Apr 1917, and was assigned to the 2nd ReserveBn at E. Sandling. On 27 May 1917, he was transferred to the 164thInfantry BN at Witely. On 28 Feb 1918 he was transferred to 102 Bn andsent to France. He was in the field by 4 Mar 1918. He was awarded a GoodConduct Badge in the field, On 2 Sep 1918, he was wounded in the rightthigh by shrapnel at Arras. Initially he was in the 2nd CanadianStationary hospital at Outreau,France, then he was sent back to England 6Sep 1918, to the Central Military Hospital at Herne Bay. On 18 Oct 1918he went to the Granville Special Hospital at Buxton, Derbyshire; on 18Dec 1818 he went to the 5 Canadian General Hospital at Kirkdale, and on13 Jan 1919, he set out for Canada aboard the H.M.A.T."Essequibo",arriving at Halifax 26 Jan 1919. He was given 2 weeks leave starting 29Jan 1919 and reported to Brant Military Hospital in Burlington 12 Feb1919. On 2 Apr 1919 he went to the Dominion Orthepaedic Hospital inToronto. They were finally able to remove the shell fragment, but therewas permanent nerve damage and atrophy of the right leg. He was chargedwith 2 days AWL after 3 Sep 1919 and forfeited 2 days pay. During histime in the service, he made a pay assignment of $20 a month to hismother. On his release from the hospital, he was discharged from theservice 4 Nov 1919 at Toronto as "medically unfit".
