The Leaver Family Tree

James WHITTON [Parents] was born on Apr 16 1846 in Glenburnie, Ontario. He died on Aug 23 1911/0093 in Wellman's Corners, Ontario. He was buried on Aug 26 1911 in Wellmans Cemetery, Rawden Township, Hastings. He married Emley Jane TOMPKINS about 1881 in Rawden Township, Hastings County, Ontario.

Other marriages:
COTTOR, Matilda Jane

james and Elizabeth Whitton, James' parents, lived in a rough cast, three storey home with an underground basement that was used for a summer kitchen, and also a room for a cheese vat where Mrs Whitton, along with a Miss Bradgley, made the
first cheese made in Northumberland County. The cheese grew in popularity and a group of investors headed by Mr Whitton Sr, William Hume, and James Clough, with Mrs Whitton as the managing director, formed a company and moved the cheesmaking
operation to a small factory which was called the Burnbrae Cheese Factory.

The factory expanded to Hastings County and a new factory was built at Wellman's Corners and James Whitton Jr. was named the first manager of that factory. The cheese business fell on hard times and couldn't secure a constant source of milk
supply at a price that would allow them to be profitable so the operation was discontinued. Mrs Whitton continued to produce a fine brand of cheese in the basement vats until 1880 when the Wellman's Corners factory reopened. James Whitton Jr.
was secured as head cheesemaker. He later went on to become the Dairy Instructor for the Ontario Department of Agriculture. Cheese from this factory won many provincial and National awards. One such award was a gold capped and engraved ebony
walking stick which is still in the possession of the Whitton family at the home of James Whitton in Euphrasia Township. About 1883 Mr Whitton sold his farm to the late John Glassford, of Kingston, and moved to Campellford. Part of the family
received their education in a log school, situated at the east corner below Burnbrae Church, on the north side of the road. The rest of the family were educated at the old stone school in Burnbrae, between the sixth and seventh concessions.
This school was later burned down. Mr and Mrs Whitton were apparently swindled out of the first farm they bought after landing in Canada. There is some confusion as to whether that farm was near Kingston or in Quebec.

James and his wife were cheesemakers in Ontario. James later became a cheese buyer and manufacturer. James was taught how to make cheese by Professor King who came to Ontario from the US. They established a cheese factory at Burnbrae P.O. in
Seymour Twp. Hastings Co. Later they operated the old factory of Prof. King which was located at Wellman's Corners. They called this factory the Plum Grove Chees Factory. James' brother george also helped out as a cheesemaker. Family receipes
from Scotland, where Matilda Jane's family originated from, were used in their cheese operation 1 HEAL Birth: Marriage records of Hastings Co. Ont. shows age as 25. 1901 census lists birthdate

Emley Jane TOMPKINS was born in 1851. She died on Nov 10 1940 in Rawden Township, Hastings County, Ontario. She was buried on Nov 13 1940 in Wellmans Cemetery, Rawden Township, Hastings. She married James WHITTON about 1881 in Rawden Township, Hastings County, Ontario.

I am aware that James Whitton was married twice. However, you, Bill Whitton, and I each have a different version of the brides last name. (Maybe she had been married before she married James.) The Family Bible has the following notation under
the "Deaths" section of the family register: " EMLEY JANE TOMPKINS WHITTON - DIED NOVEMBER 10, 1940." (The Tompkins may be a given name but in other cases my grandfather was in the habit of writing the woman's maiden name just before the
married surname.) Bill Whitton makes her name as Emily J. Fletcher and you have her listed as Emily Jane Potts. Interesting, isn't it. Bill has the issue of this marriage to be Erma and Ethel; you have it as George Richard and Ethel; and I have
it as Ethel, only. The Family Bible that I have in my possession lists George Richard, that's Mary's Great Grandfather, as being born December 18, 1878 and Matilda Jane (Cotter) Whitton's death date as January 4, 1879. Unless there was
something clandestine going on; that would make George a son of Matilda Jane and would leave Ethel as the sole issue of the second marriage to Emley Jane Tompkins Whitton. ®2

James' second wife was married prior to marrying James. I do not, or did not until now, know her maiden name but her married name, to her first husband, was Potts. I don't know his first name but they 3 children who were living in the household
of James at the time of the 1881 census. ®95

My records say that Emily Potts was married to Robert Fletcher (but no date). I presume it was before before she

married James Whitton. I wonder if it is possible that Emily Tompkins might have been married to a guy named Potts, then Fletcher, then Whitton. Who knows? I talked to a friend named Frank Potts in Campbellford on the weekend but he was no help.
®94

I looked at the Family Bible that my Grandma has in her position, which was her mother's. In it, it has listed a death, a Mrs. Robert Fletcher (with the notation Grandma behind it) with the death as Nov 11 1940. My Grandma, Mabel, and her
sisters all remember "Grandma Fletcher" But so far no one can remember too much about it. ®96
