According to Service Records obtained from The National Archives of Canada in Ottawa( RG 150 accession 1992-93/166 Reg # 142561 Box #5492.56), Samuel Edward Leaver enlisted in the Canadian Army in Barrie,ON on 29 Nov 1915. His Attestation paper states that he was born inOakville, ON 24 Sep 1896. He recorded his mother, Mrs. Sam Leaver, as next of kin, living in Oakville. He was single, living in Oakville, and employed as a carpenter & farmer. He was Methodist, 19 years old at the time of enlistment, 5' 4 1/2" tall, with fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair, weight 135 lbs. He had slightly defective eyesight in the left eye. He enlisted as a private # 2498961 in the 76th BN. After training,he sailed from Halifax aboard the SS " Empress of Britain" 23 Apr 1916,and arrived in Liverpool 5 May 1916. He was transferred from 76th Bn to the 24th BN at W. Sandling 28 Jun 1916 and was in France by 30 Jun 1916. After an action on 17 Sep 1916, he was reported missing, on the casualty report of 5 May 1917 he was presumed killed 17 Sep 1917, and the Burial Report 19 Dec 1919 states he was killed in action 17 Sep 1917. He assigned $15 a month of his pay to his mother which was cancelled Nov1916.
According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, he was buried at Pozieres British Cemetery at Ovillers-La Boisselle, France.
His name is enscribed in a war memorial with several others in downtown Oakville on Trafalgar Rd. as one of the defenders of Vimy Ridge.
