September 27, 2004

Nm Porter ( left) NM Holness (Right)

The Finals of the 2004 All Island Gypsum sponsored Masters KO Tournament was decided when NM Porter won an exciting Blitz playoff after the rapid and long games were tied.

NM Lorne paid the price for squandering a technically winning game in their final match to allow Porter to draw the game and force the sudden-death playoff.

In the First 30 minute Game NM Lorne easily defeated NM Porter with white but then lost the second game to Porter's English Opening, when Porter checkmated with only 15 seconds on his clock.

In the final Blitz playoff in the first game, NM Lorne won a Queen in the opening but then crumbled in time pressure and ended up losing the second 5 minute game to allow NM Porter to Squeeze through to the Finals.

on Sunday NM Jomo Pitterson deflected a potential Kingside attack to draw with NM Mark Holness in a high Quality game, which never got a chance to become volatile.

RESULTS

(Game1)NM Russel Porter vs NM Malaku Lorne 1-0

(Game2)NM Malaku Lorne vs NM Russel Porter 1-0

National Masters Jomo Pitterson and Mark Holness to clash in Masters KO Semi Finals

National Master Mark Holness secured a semifinal slot in the All Island Gypsum sponsored 2004 Masters Ko Tournament when he defeated NM Robert Wheeler with the black pieces in game 4 to win 2.5-1.5.

NM Holness will now face his Nemesis NM Jomo Pitterson who also reached the semi-finals by defeating Humphrey Gayle in their 3rd game at the Kaspablanca Chess Club.

Nm Holness came back into the match against all odds when he lost the first game with his favorite white pieces to trail the series 0-1.

However he won the second game with black , tied the 3rd and won another game with the black pieces in the 4th game on Sunday, when he played a rock solid Stonewall Dutch to steer the game into a technically won Queenless ending after 26 moves.

Nm Pitterson also scored a convincing win against Humphrey Gayle when he used the black side of a kings Indian to win an easy ending, where he had a rolling pawn center and the Bishop pair.

Nm Pitterson will now face NM Holness in the Semi-finals, while NM Lorne will face NM Porter.

Although Pitterson and Holness and NM Porter will start as favourites, it is expected to be a tough semi-finals, since historically, NM Holness has always posed major problems for Pitterson, and in fact, in their last encounter NM Holness defeated Pitterson with the black pieces, while in their last masters series they defeated each other once each, and NM Pitterson went on to win the playoff.

Nm Porter, the other favourite, has also had major problems with NM Lorne and has never beaten him in a match. In their only three encounters, NM Lorne has beaten NM Porter once and drawn with him twice.

REPORT 4 (MKO QUALIFIERS)

National Masters Russel Porter and Malaku Lorne thru To Masters KO Semi Finals

Nm Porter (L) against Douglas(R) in above picture

National Master Russel Porter blanked Markland Douglas 3-0 to secure a semi-final berth in the 2004 All Island Gypsum sponsored Masters Ko Tournament being held at Kaspablanca Chess Club. NM Porter will now face NM Malaku L:orne who also qualified for the semi finals by defeating Alain Morais 2 1/2- 11/2 last Sunday.

In the other Quarter final matches, NM Jomo Pitterson leads Humphrey Gayle 1/5-.5 while NM Robert Wheeler and NM Mark Holness are tied on 1.5 points each.

NM Lorne squeezes past tough playing Alain Morais

Nm Lorne (L) against Morais(R) in above picture

Jamaica's newest National master and Olympiad qualifier Malaku Lorne won game 4 in what seemed like a drawn Rook ending beat Former junior champ Alain Morais after both players were locked on 1.5 points apiece. Nm Lorne will now face NM Porter in the 1st leg of the MKO Semi-fianls.

NM Wheeler and NM Holness locked on 1.5 points each with one game to go

Nm Wheeler (L) against Nm Holness(R) in above picture

Long time Rivals Nm Robert Wheeler and NM Holness are locked on 1.5 points each after their 3rd game drew on Sunday when both players decided not to play on in what turned in what appeared to be a very unclear French defense position. On the previous Saturday Holness survived an inferior opening to win with the black pieces to tie the exciting series. With both players tending to play unpredictable openings their final match promises to eb very exciting, with the winner of the series facing the winner of the Pitterson Gayle match.

NM Pitterson leads Gayle by a point

Nm Pitterson survived a middlegame scare when his compensation for a lost piece seemed uncertain in his second game against Gayle on Sunday. However Humphrey lost his way in the complications and Pitterson won the game to lead by 1.5-.5 after both players had drew their first game on Saturday.
