Alain Morais

Profile last updated, July 14, 2003

"He is surprisingly patient, and positional, for a chess player his age, and he always listens to advice. With more confidence, in one year he can be a National Master.."
---- NM Mark Holness

INTRODUCTION

Born in Jamaica in October, 1983, Alain Morais learnt chess when he was about 11 years old and took to the game like a fish to water. He steadily improved and for the past five years has easily been one of Jamaica's leading junior players. He graduated over a year ago from Meadowbrook High School (located in the corporate area) where he was the star of the school's chess team, which won the national inter-schools chess trophy twice with Alain starring on board one.

PLAYING STYLE

Alain is a patient and positional Junior chess player, which is surprising since Tactical play is dominant among Jamaican Junior chess players. More recently he has added strong tactics to his naturally positional style and this combination has enabled him to make incredible improvements in his game.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

The Highlight of his career no doubt occured when he obtained his first major title and was crowned Jamaica's Junior chess champion in April of 2003, ahead of Malaku Lorne

Some other highlights of his career include;

2003,July, :- Barbados Open Junior Championships; 3rd place
2003 Jamaica Open Junior Chess Champs; 1st place

RECENT TOURNAMENT RESULTS

Recently, Alain Morais has done Jamaica proud by achieving 3rd place in the 2003 Barbados Open Junior Chess Champs. He will also play the 2003 Jamaica National Chess Champs, which begins in August, 2003.

2003 has been a great year for Morais. In the first quarter, he stamped his class on the opposition (including Daren Wisdom, Ras Malaku Lorne and female chess olympian Zhu Hui) to win the 2003 Jamaica Junior Champion title. On June 21 he beat FM Warren Elliott in an epic blitz encounter and in July he reached the quarter-finals of the prestigious 2003 Masters Knock-out tournament where he succumbed to Elliott. His local rating at the end of June, 2003 was 2014. He has also achieved a personal milestone of being invited to play in the 2003 national championships. A determined and patient player with a great all-round understanding of the game, Morais is regarded as one of the future stars of Jamaican chess.

CONCLUSION

Alain Morais is without a doubt one of the future stars of jamaican chess. His patient and positional style belies his age and experience. His discipline, his raw talent and his humility if properly combined with training,confidence and tactical play,can give him the potential to become a National Master, within a year.
