Malaku Lorne

Profile last updated, August 20, 2003

""Fear is not the absence of courage, it is the presence of it yet the willingness to go on"

INTRODUCTION

Born in 1984, Malaku Lorne first learned chess at 9 years old, but really started taking a key interest when he was 13 years old. He played his first chess Tournament, the Amatuer Chess Open, in 1998. Since then, this graduate of Wolmer's Boys has gradually improved his game and is now the highest rated Junior Chess Player in Jamaica, with a rating of to 2137.

PLAYING STYLE

Malaku Lorne's Chess Playing style is predominantly positional, and he plays simple logical chess in the Opening stages of the game. His real strength is seen in slow positions where a logical buildup is required before the strike. Whenever Malaku engages in serious tactics, it is usually only after he has maximised all his positional advantages, or to initiate the start of a series of decisive blows.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

The Highlight of Malaku's Career had to be in 2002 when he was crowned Jamaica National Junior Champion. He also played in his first Jamaica National Championship in that year and put on an excellent performance in that Tournament.

In 2003, Malaku Lorne won his first Open Swiss Tournament when he came first in the 2003 Harold Chan Chess Open ahead of another top Junior, Alain Morais and National Master, Shane Matthews.

A summary of his career Highlights include;

2003 Harold Chan Chess Open; 1st place
2003 Jamaica National Junior Champs; 2nd place
2002 Jamaica Observer Chess Champs: 1st Place
2002 Jamaica National Juniors: 1st place
2002 Xmas Open Swiss Tourney: 2nd Place
2002 Jamaica Open Tournament: 2nd Place
2000 Jamaica National Junior Champs: 2nd Place

RECENT TOURNAMENT RESULTS

Riding on the confidence gained from winning the 2003 Harold Chan Open, Malaku Lorne is currently performing well in the 2003 Jamaica National Chess Championship.

2003 has been a fairly good year for Malaku Lorne. Although placing second place behind his rival Alain Morais, Malaku came back strongly in the middle of the year to win the 2003 Dr. Harold Chan Chess Open, which was a Tournament dominated by Juniors.

CONCLUSION

Malaku Lorne alongside Alain Morais and Daren Wisdom leads the next wave of Juniors. The record shows the undeniable Talent of this remarkable Junior. Malaku has shown great resilience in rising from setbacks to coming back stronger than before. This ability shows that talent aside, Malaku has great fighting spirit and the indomitable Heart of a Lion.
