REPORT ON NATIONAL CHAMPS |
By Peter Myers, Vice President Middlesex NM ELLIOT REPEATS National Master Warren Elliot carried his bat from start to finish in winning the 2001 National Chess Championship in Jamaica. Elliot who hails from Montego Bay, but is now based in St. Andrew, finished the tournament with a perfect 9/9, unprecedented in the history of the Championship. Elliot now joins a long list of individuals who have won the Championship back to back, they include Steve Curry (1970 and1971), Harold Chan (1972, 1973 and 1974) and again (1978 and 1979 tied with Robert Wheeler), Sheldon Wong (1976 and 1977), Robert Wheeler (1979 tied with Harold Chan, 1980, 1981), Shane Matthews (1986 and 1987), Jomo Pitterson (1992 tied with Ryan Palmer and 1993) and Duane Rowe (1995 tied with Russell Porter and 1996). In second was the maestro, National Master Shane Matthews who despite starting the tournament with 0.5 from 2 games, reeled off a string of victories to score a distant but respectable 6.5/9. Matthews two losses came at the hands of Humphrey Gayle in the first round and Elliot in the last round. He drew with FM Grantel Gibbs in the second round. In third was the fast improving Candidate Master Peter Myers, who finished with 5.5/9 despite promising so much. Myers seemed unable to cope effectively with the new FIDE time limit, which he was playing with for the first time.
The final standings in the National Chess Championship is as follows: |
