Review of The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman

  • It was the finale to a grand trilogy ( His Dark Materials). Naturally, I would have some high expectations of it.
  • For those who don't know what this series is all about, here's a brief history. Well, in this book, when people first became conscious, sentient, thinking beings, Dust was created. And angels were created out of this Dust.
  • The first angel who was created called himself God or the Authority.
  • The Authority believed in burning heretic, no open-mindedness was allowed and erm.., to cut a long story short, bad things.
  • Well, some didn't agree, so therefore, there was a war, but the rebel angels lost. Remember the story of Adam and Eve? Pullman incorporated this into his story.
  • Anyway, some people rose up to oppose this 35 000 years later, and the rebel angels are helping them.
  • The hero is Will something and Lyra something.
  • There are gay angels there . (Note this: bambi)
  • I have to commend on the very, very, very good plotline, fast-moving story and , it rocks...
  • However, in the past three books the climax builds up and leads up.. an anticlimax.
  • I didn't really like the ending. Up to now, I still don't know why Mary Malone is considered the tempter, and is she supposed to be a 'good' guy or a 'bad' guy. It didn't satisfactorily lead to a nice conclusion.
  • And what is the Fall? The first Fall, i mean. What did Adam and Eve really do to create the Original Sin?

-sparky flower- can't run as far as before, feels tired.

21 Feb 2003,9:32p.m   spoil me =)

  • feeling miserable. just got my test results. eight A1s, one A2 and one B4.
  • don't say that is good. i heard that a million times. it's not.
  • i cried at the hall.
  • and cried at my house for an hour.
  • and i am crying again.
  • at first, after i left the hall, i felt better. then, the truth just SANK in, and i couldn't stop crying.
  • i don't even want to do anything, no running, no reading, no nothing.
  • no don't be silly, i don't want to commit suicide. well, evem though it's bad, how can anyone want to commit suicide? i mean, there's still so many years ahead.
  • i make no sense. i am contradicting myself.
  • this is probably the stupidest entry i written.

yes i changed the look of the blog.

21 Feb 2003,9:32p.m   spoil me =)

last sunday, whooppss... Last Sunday I just went for a 7K run (the KL International Marathon) . it was also the first time i ran in a week, no thanks to my fever and flu and cough and what-nots. whoopee! i got free McD's vouchers for CheeseBurger and McChicken (with every purchase of some other thing)

whoops. i forgot to capitalize my 'i'. (If you don't know what i am talking about, read my 15 Feb entry.)

SPM results are rumored to be out on the 26th

Caught your attention, didn't it?I am quite nervous, duh!

I think I have to revamp my website soon. I think my tagline/slogan/thing that catches your attention - 'A Soppy Teen Love Drama' doesn't cut it. I can't believe what induced me to create that. I am not soppy. Far from it.

I thought the finale of X-Files (that was shown on Tv2) would be more impressive, but it lacked ommph. Also, I hate that new girl in Charmed. Dunno why. She just gets on my nerves.

Anyway. I borrowed several books from the British Council Library today. One of them was

The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman

Hei, I haven't even read the book yet.

An Intro: This book is the last book of theHIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy, which really rocks, not like Harry bloody Potter, if Pullman's second book ( The Subtle Knife) is anything to go by.

I would not recommend it to those below 12, because the book is rather serious and deals with murder and death. Quite unlike your basic fantasy feel-good story.

Also, the whole trilogy questions the whole concept of Christianity. Which is quite shocking, since this is the first so-called 'children' book I came across that actually dones that. Anyway, read this with and open mind, and trust me, you WILL be captivated.

Will review the book sometime soon.

15 Feb 2003,12:41p.m   spoil me =)

hi everyone,

ok, it's been xtremely long since i updated.

how time flies.

truth is i am darn lazy to update...

let me get you aquainted with my life.

i said earlier that this website to be a book review website, didn't i?

hmmmphhhh.. ok,let it be a mixture then..

anyway...

i am sick. i have been sick for the past week. for the past two weeks in fact. i have a flu. no not mentally sick.

there's a 7km run tomorrow.hope i recover in time. hah, the months i was gone, i have increased my mileage from a paltry 2 miles to *gasp* 20 miles.

although, this week i have been running a grand total of.... 0 miles. nada. nil. zero.

and my weight increased by 2 kilogrammes...

i really admired those ppl who can go on diets and skip meals. hah, i have never been able to skip desert for lunch, whatmore one entire whole meal! that's why i took up running. to keep my weight from increasing.

oh, did i mention, one of my new year's resolution is to put proper punctuation, capital letters and the like, and no more short forms like 'ppl' and 'n'.

I have started the 'A' Level progamme at Taylor's College doing Further Maths, Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Where I found out that Chemistry is really quite fun. No, I don't mean to sound like a nerd.

Bambi and Prosperous Thumper are both in the SAME class doing Maths, Maths 2, Accounts and Econs. They are also in Taylor's, but is taking SAM ( South Australian Matriculation) instead.

Anyway, that's for now, I have finally updated, so there's NO excuse for you lot to NOT visit my website.

Putting it in simpler terms, VISIT HERE every Friday nite. whoops. Knite, sorry. Actually, night, in fact. Anyway, I am gonna be updating every Friday, so have fun and don't kill yourselves.

-sparky flower- continues with her asinine scribbling after eons of not writing.
