GSM was created by europeans and originally meant "Groupé Special Mobile",

but this didn't translate well, so the now commom mean is: Global System Mobiles,

and is a world-wide standard for digital cellular telefony. GSM is a published

standard by ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute),

and it's used in Europe, Asia and increasingly America.
