Martha Kent, widowed wife of Jonathan Kent, is Clark's adoptive mother. After her husband was elected senator just before his fatal heart attack, Martha Kent took over the senate seat.
Martha and Jonathan found Clark in a field by their house during the Meteor Shower of 1989. Ever since, she and Jonathan have been feverishly trying to protect Clark and his secret.
Martha is compassionate, kind, giving, and her son's wise counsel. She, many times, played the referee between Clark and Jonathan.
Although Martha is intelligent, she is sometimes naive to the ways of the Luthors, especially Lionel. She tries to see the good in him (after all, that is what she and Jonathan have thought Clark) and in the meantime has fallen in love with Lionel. This is probably to do with the death of her husband.
Martha has spent her last air time as a regular on Smallville in episode 6.22 Phantom. When the U.S. Senator Burke was murdered Lionel Luthor suggested Martha to take his place in the Senate. She accepted and has moved to Washington. Hopefully she will make some special guest appearances in the seasons to come.

Pete Ross was Clark Kent's best friend. He is strong, determined, giving, and loyal and impulsive. He was also the first to find out about Clark's secret.
After stumbling across Clark's spaceship, Pete insists they tell Chloe Sullivan so they can become famous and rich. Clark is obviously hesitant and steals the ship back from Pete. Pete sees him in the act and Clark is forced to tell Pete his secret. Pete is shocked at first and offended that Clark never trusted his secret with him sooner. But after Pete gets in trouble and Clark comes to get him out of it, Pete realizes Clark's reasons for his secret.
Pete and Clark remained good friends until Pete got himself into $20,000 worth of trouble and asked Clark to bail him out using his powers. Clark, after Pete's incessant badgering, Clark reluctantly agrees and "borrows" Lex's car to get Pete out. After that incident, Clark begins to distrust Pete and they begin to grow apart.
Shortly afterward, other people, including Lex Luthor, find out that Pete knows and interrogate him. Pete says that it's too much to keep his secret and moves with his mother to Wichita.

Jonathan is stubborn and doesn't like accepting help from other people. He is strong and is full of wisdom. He doesn't ask anyone anything more than what he expects for himself. He also has a bad temper.
He has trouble trusting the Luthors (Lionel and Lex) because of their bad history and he doesn't hide it either. He doesn't like Clark being such close friends with Lex Luthor but allows it.
During episode 5.12 Reckoning, Jonathan succumbs to a heart attack and dies in Clark's arms with Martha by his side. Clark is extremely effected by this because of how close he was to his father. Jonathan comes back to tell Clark that Lionel Luthor knows his secret and to give him guidance.
