Lionel Luthor is the father of Lex Luthor. Lionel co-owns the company LuthorCorp, with his son, Lex.

Lex has learned his heinous ways from his father's example. Lionel has but Lex through test after test to test his competency and loyalty to the company. To top that off, after Lex's plane crashed on a deserted island, Lionel convinced Lex that he had a mental break. He committed Lex to Belle Reve, a psychiatric ward where Lex underwent treatment to erase the incriminating evidence that Lionel murdered his own parents.

Lionel has caused the Kent family heartache after heartache, including pushing Jonathan Kent to the point of his fatal heart attack.

Jor-El, Clark Kent's biological father, needed an "oracle" in order to communicate with Clark so he chose Lionel. In this process, Lionel learned Clark's secret and has been faithful in keeping it and seems to be a changed man even after Jor-El's essense left him.

Lionel has revealed that he, along with Dr. Virgil Swann, Edward Teague, and the Queens, was part of a group called Veritas. Veritas was formed to welcome "The Traveler" who is, of course, Clark. Lionel told Clark that he knew about his secret since before his arrival on Earth. He and the rest of the Veritas members swore to protect him.

Lionel died protecting Clark's secret from his greatest enemy, Lex Luthor. After Lionel refused to give Lex any information, Lex pushed Lionel out of the Daily Planet window where Lionel met his doom on the pavement below. Although seemingly shady throughout the entire series, Lionel ultimately died protecting the greatest superhero that will ever walk this earth.
