(A lot of this has to do with the spirit of the ring but Ryou is directly affected so it�s in there with it.)
Ryou is always the peace maker in the group, and often is self drawn away from the battles; he is always there for them but never likes to fight at all. He seems to be very sensitive and sweet, always trying to help.
He seems very weak and easily taken advantage of but when the time comes he can take charge. (Well sometimes) He is pure of heart and kind of a pretty boy.
The poor boy lives alone in an apartment, due to his mother and sister dieing when he was younger, his father is always away on a dig or something like that.
But it was because of his fathers expeditions that he came to own the sennen ring, when his father was gone in Egypt he came across the ring and thought it great for his son, or �destined to have it.�
His friends that he actually did have, before he met Yugi, were said to have been put in a coma, or hospitalized because of the spirit of the ring. People avoid him for this. Poor Ryou had no idea about how is friends got hurt (or even that some got turned into dolls, as it is said in some places) because the ring always kept its power secret.
Ryou is a transfer student to Domino high, coming from the UK, as you can tell from the obvious accent when he talks. His father became the owner of one of the museums in the area. Really shy, he pretty much avoids every one until later on in the series.
When the group gets of the ship in to duelist kingdom Tea spots him in the woods but doesn�t say anything. You don�t hear from him again until he pops out and challenges Yami to a duel. (The duel where every one�s soul is trapped within their favorite card.)
Bakura (the evil spirit) traps Ryou in his favorite card; the change of hearts. When yami wins the duel they think that Bakura was banished, (Well Yugi and Ryou anyways because every one else doesn�t remember.) Things go back to normal and Ryou goes along with them but normally traveling in the back away from every one else.
Inside of Pegasus� castle, Bakura (spirit) tries to steal Mokuba�s body, but fails when Honda (Tristan in American version) stops him and throws the ring into the sea. The ring eventually comes back and after Pegasus loses, Bakura challenges him and wins the millennium eye.
Much later when Malik appears Bakura traps part of his soul in the puzzle. During battle city him and Marik make an alliance together (creating a very hot evil team.) and both plan to go against the pharaoh.
Later when Malik loses his body he asks Ryou/Bakura for help to battle Marik, they both lose and are seemingly sent to the shadow realm. Ryou is now able to take full control of his body.
