What Sin Is?

Worldly Sin

The dictionary definition that I have used at the beginning, shows this to be so. The word 'sin' is defined as a transgression or "any illegal or immoral act or behavior." So we do not have to believe that there is a god in order to be defined as a sinner. We only have to act or behave in any immoral or illegal way.

Therefore, if you are reading this on your work or school computer and are supposed to be doing other tasks, at this time, then you are failing in your moral duty to your employer or school. And by doing this you are sinning right now.

Religious Sin

"All have turned away from God; they have all gone wrong; no one does what is right, not even one" (Romans 3. 12 GNB)

The above quote is speaking in reference to all the people of the world. And it declares that "no one does what is right" and "all are wrong."

"Whoever sins is guilty of breaking God's law, because sin is a breaking of the law." (1 John 3. 4 GNB)

So "no one does what is right" because Whoever breaks God's law is guilty of sin.

But what is God's law?

Put simply, the Law is the Ten Commandments, some will say that this is not so today because of what Jesus has done. However I would point out that Jesus declared that all the Commandments will continue untill the end. (Matthew 5. 17 - 20) And He also clearly states that they all rest upon two. He did not say, "There are only two and that is the Law." He said that all the commandments rest upon two. (Matthew 22. 34 - 40). Back to the Law of God.

"Now we know that everything in the law applies to those who live under the law, in order to stop all human excuses and bring the whole world under God's judgement. For no one is put right in God's sight by doing what the law requires; what the law does is to make us know that we have sinned." (Romans 3. 19-20 GNB)

So we see that the purpose of God's law is to show us that we are wrong. That we do not do what is right. That we are not under His umbrella and that we are all sinners.
