FACILITIES: Hobart, being the state's capital, is the centre of commerce, industry, sport and the arts. Tasmania's Parliament House, originally built as a bond store, is close to Salamanca Place, whilst most governement departments are located nearby. The waterfront is the focus for much of Hobart's social life with the finish of the Sydney and Melbourne to Hobart Yacht races signalling the start of a month-long party known as the Hobart Summer Festival that includes the Taste of Tasmania, a gastronomic indulgence extending over several days that entices thousands of visitors and locals to gather on the waterfront to sample the island's produce and enjoy the live entertainment. Across from well known Constitution Dock, the safe anchorage for yachts after rigours of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, can be found the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, with its fine collection of colonial and contemporary art and historic artefacts. Opposite is the relocated Tasmanian Maritime Museum with its comprehensive display outlining the history of coastal and river shipping. Over the other side of the docks is Salamanca Place, a magnet for lovers of arts, crafts fine food and wine. Built between 1835 and 1860, the warehouses were converted to their present elegence in the 1980's and now hum new life as galleries, shops restaurants and nightspots. Every Saturday the area is transformed into Salamanca market, a colourful array of stalls selling everything from the best fresh fruit and vegetables to that second hand bargain! Once you have done the shopping find a spot under an umbrella at one of the many pavement cafes and watch the world go while enjoying a cappuccino! A short stroll behind the bustle of Salamanca you will find the former maritime village of Battery Point, now a residential area of Hobart that boasts the quaintest of colonial cottages and the grandest of Georgian and Victorian mansions. Nearby you can find the Peacock Theatre whilst to the CBD are located the historic Theatre Royal and the Playhouse Threatre. Shows from the major Australian theatre companies tour on a regular basis. The world renowned Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra presents a regular concert season. Hobart's main cinema complex is located in Collins Street and the AFI- State cinema is located in nearby North Hobart. The Queens Domain, land set aside last century for the recreational use of Hobart's citizens, is the site of the new Hobart Aquatic Centre, the Domain Tennis Centre and the Hobart Athletic Centre. Good facilities exist for cricket, Australian Rules Football, netball, hockey, soccer and rugby, with international and national games attracting good crowds. The mountain, foothills and public gardens offer wonderful walks while the nearby coast and rivers are famous for their boating, fishing and surfing opportunities. The city's busy shops and offices almost rub shoulders with fishing boats in the dock, and hillside suburbs nestle in bushland, looking out to the sparkling river. As you would expect of a capital city, there is a full range of commercial services and opportunities and the central city shopping is unsurpassed. International hotels, top class restaurants and civic clubs are there for you, and those with an interest in community affairs will find a full range of service clubs, suburban committees and active craft groups. Excellent schools, colleges and training institutions, cater for students of all ages and the University of Tasmania has an extensive range of courses.
