| So I'm at the airport in Bordeaux and I'm reading this past weeks edition of the Economist and I felt so disheartened. There was an article that listed all of the things that Mr. Bush's new administration will need to do and it looked quite daunting. I even found myself asking how some of these issues were ever our problem (this is the nationalistic OUR). Then I reminded myself that since the end of the cold war the US has become the older brother of the world. I prefer this analogy to the 1 superpower description, simply because I don't feel that are a "super"-power. I mean- if the US decided to say forget it to all of these problems, -it wouldn't be possible, now would it? I would like to be able to say that NATO or the UN could handle North Korea or Iran, but without the threat of US military how effective would they be? Between them, if they could agree on anything, there would be no issues, but it just seems like a mass concensus is impossible unless it is to call the US a bully. Now, that seems childish to me. I, as an American citizen, didn't want this war, but now that we're there all that can be done is to support the effort because the only losers would be the Iraqi people, who didn't vote to be invaded either. The other thing that bothered me about that article was the ammount of oil that the US imports. It's incredible!! It makes me want to go out and buy a bike and a skateboard after selling my car! I wish that my motivation was the environment, but it is the simple fact that the US is a political slave to the oil concerns. I can't feel comfortable with that set up. It's not a new realization for me (International Relations major and all), but being in Europe and the UK has driven home the point that our lifestyles are incredibly wasteful. So, the moral- everyone learn to walk, rollerblade, skateboard, or find a car pool in order to stop wars. CSHL- 11 November, 2004. Bordeaux, France. |
