During the freedom fighters' most recent mission, Princess Sally was hurt and pronounced dead after she returned to Knothole.  To everyone's surprise, Sonic the Hedgehog was the one responsible for her death.  King Acorn sentenced Sonic to life in prison.  Now Robotnik can use this time to strike again.

Sonic protests as he is escorted to a plane.  Geoffrey St. John punches Sonic in the stomach to keep him quiet.  Uncle Chuck protests that Geoffrey is only supposed to escort Sonic.  He then tells Sonic that he will return.  Later, the freedom fighters wonder how Sonic could have been responsible for Sally's demise.  Dulcy's head appears from the window, and she begins to cry.

As the plane flies, Sonic thinks about how everything started.  King Acorn had suddenly returned to normal and ordered Sally to attack Robotropolis.  Now Sonic must travel to the place that gave him nightmares as a kid since his father told him only bad boys and prisoners of war were sent to the Devil's Gulag.  Sonic suddenly realizes that he is not alone as Sleuth Dawggy-Dawg (who betrayed the freedom fighters in Sonic the Hedgehog #42) asks about what Robotnik promised him for being a double agent.

The military policemen flying the plane realize that they are being attacked and try to take evasive action.  A swatbot shoots the plane, which soon crashes.  The swatbots soon search the crashed plane and find that Sonic is missing. Sonic begins to attack the swatbots without thinking.  Once the deed is finished, he races off in the distance.

Drago appears behind King Acorn and announces that Sonic has escaped.  King Acorn smiles and asks for Geoffrey St. John.  Geoffrey appears, and King Acorn yells at him for Sonic's escape.  Geoffrey kneels and vows that he will capture Sonic no matter what.

As Sonic walks through the mud, he uses large leaves to help cover his tracks.  He soon finds his way into a cave and remembers what Uncle Chuck told him.  Uncle Chuck had tried to see the medical records, but Doctor Quack said that the king ordered that no one could see the records.  Then Uncle Chuck protested to the king, but King Acorn said there will be no investigation to determine what happened in Sally's death.  Uncle Chuck later told Sonic that the campfire talk (in Sonic #46) revealed that there was at least one traitor, which was not Sonic.  He then told Sonic not to give up hope.  Sonic stops thinking about everything and slowly goes to sleep.

At Knothole, Antoine explains to Bunnie that only Drago and Geoffrey St. John have visited the king.  Antoine is suspicious that Drago, who never declared himself loyal to the king, was granted an audience with the king.  Bunnie and Antoine follow Drago to a hut, and they stand outside a window.  Drago introduces himself as the "future 'duke' of Robotropolis" and says that Hershey may be his duchess.  Hershey protests that she has had enough, and Drago grabs her arm.  Drago then tells her that Sonic escaped and Geoffrey St. John was ordered to find him.  He adds that if they are lucky, Sonic and Geoffrey will kill each other.  Bunnie and Antoine are shocked and continue to follow Drago when he leaves the hut.  Antoine is surprised when he loses sight of Drago.  A swatbot hits Antoine on the head and another swatbot captures Bunnie.  Drago orders for both Bunnie and Antoine to be taken to Downunda.

Sonic dreams that Muttski is trying to eat his chili dog.  He soon begins to wake up and realizes that the barking is real.  Geoffrey St. John was waiting with his men and tasmanian devils, one of the few animals on Mobius that did not evolve and is good for tracking scents.  Geoffrey and his men begin to search the passages of the cave. Sonic realizes that he cannot run and wonders how he was found so soon.  Geoffrey uses his device that monitors a bug in one of Sonic's shackles. Sonic soon smells something that is not a tasmanian devil.  Geoffrey punches Sonic, who manages to move out of the way.  The two begin fighting and almost fall into a hole in the cave.

Meanwhile, King Acorn holds court and thanks everyone for their loyalty.  King Acorn continues to say that they have been fighting too much with little progress.  He then announces that the position of Warlord will be reinstated and introduces everyone to Robotnik.  Rotor pulls out his laser gun, which transforms into a large weapon.  He fires it at Robotnik, who activates a shield on his left hand.  Robotnik points his left finger at Rotor and destroys the weapon.  He then begs everyone to stay and finds Uncle Chuck and Muttski.  Robotnik slams the heads of the two robots together, saying that they and everyone else need attitude adjustments.

Sonic and Geoffrey St. John continue to fight.  Geoffrey screams that Sonic killed the woman he loved.  Sonic yells back that he loved her, and then knocks Geoffrey unconscious.  Sonic speeds out of the cave only to find that the cliff drops off at a waterfall.  Geoffrey aims his weapon at Sonic and says there is no escape.  Sonic turns and dives from the cliff.

To be continued.

Sonic-Grams highlights:
~ Knuckles: The Dark Legion mini-series has been extended to an ongoing status
~ After the events in Sonic #39, Mecha Madness, and Sonic #40, Antoine didn't speak to Sonic unless it dealt with business.  Tails thought they might be on more friendly terms until Antoine saw what Sonic did to Sally
