Syllabus Worksheets Work to Date

Monochromatic Surrealism

Goal:
The student will plan and paint an original Surrealistic picture within the time given and in the manner learned using only BLACK, WHITE AND ONE COLOR.  The student will take notes during the introduction and subsequent lectures describing what the subject of this project is.  The student will read and write on this subject out of Scholastic ART magazine in the manner directed.  The homework is designed to give personal time devoted to creative expression.  Monochromatic means to use only one color with black and white.

Materials:

     9” X 12” newsprint            9” X 12” manila                              pencil

crayons                              one opaque paint color                paint brush

                        Scholastic’s ART magazine issues

Steps:
Before starting to design any idea the student will refer to notes taken during all lectures, read these directions, and will do the reading and writing portion.  Save the written work.  Save the homework.  (Failure to follow directions will lower your grade - just like failing to cooperate in real life will hurt you)

1.    For homework you are to fill a 9” X 12” newsprint with one idea which is very real looking but NOT REAL at the same time.  This pull at your brain is a good indicator that you have a surrealistic idea.  You are to do a total of three (3) different ideas.

2.            Shade the three ideas, this means to use black and think shadows, not color.  As you approach being done with this, now add the one color to your picture.  You may shade the color as well.

3.            Number the three sketches, that is, number from the background to the foreground, from the farthest away object as #1 to whatever is the closest.  This is done as a roadmap to you as to what to paint first, then second, and so on.

4.            Transfer your idea to the manila paper lightly in pencil and paint it neatly, and slowly, as in the demo and directions above.

Surrealism is the depiction of a scene that the viewer totally believes to be real and fully true, and yet still KNOWS that it cannot possibly be true!  There must be that element of struggle in the viewer’s mind.

CONTRASTS:        alive / non-alive            hot / cold     non-expected sizes

PUNS:            a head of lettuce            a 24 foot yacht            the plains (planes) of Nebraska

DREAMLIKE!
Juxtapose is a term that will help you.  Look it up and discover new ideas!

*  Your grade is based on the proper use of time, neatly blended values of paint, and neatness of edges.

*  You must also present your own unique idea that is surrealistic.

*  You must hand in all sketches and writings.
