Impressionism

Goal:
The student will demonstrate that they know what the movement of Impressionism is by painting in that manner.

Definition:
Impressionism is the depiction of a scene in terms of light and the eye is the agent which blends the bits of pure color that the artist paints.*

Materials:
pencil              2   9” X 12” sketch papers            crayons                      newspaper to paint upon

brush               opaque poster paints                    9” X 12” manila painting paper

Steps:

1.     Take notes during lecture and keep track of due dates.

2.     Design three (3) sketches of a place where you have been before and that you know quite well.  Keep these or lose one grade.

Due:   ___________________  .

Suggestions?... draw:

                    Your house

                         A park

                           The school

3.     Color your sketches.  Number them from the background to the foreground.     Due:   ___________________  .

4.     Transfer your idea to the manila paper roughly.    Due:   ___________________  .

5.     Paint the entire paper with the first coat of paint, following your colored and numbered sketch.

Due:   ___________________  .

6.     Now you are ready to paint your idea a second time impressionistically.  Follow the examples posted and from your memory of the demonstration.

The Final work Due:   ___________________  .

Hints for success:

*Be sure that the entire paper is completely covered before the 2nd painting begins

*Be sure to have every color in every area

*Be aware of the subject’s contour for brushstroke ideas

*Vary your brushstroke to fit the subject being painted

A more full explanation of what Impressionism is:
Impressionism uses pure colors to render the scene where the eyes do the color mixing.  The brush strokes are rapid and follow the subject’s contours, often with apparently little regard to details.  Particular attention is paid to the feelings of the painter and viewer as the composition is made.

I have several links that I think will give you much nice information on Impressionists.  There are many pictures and examples to look at as well, why not check it out?
