TEACHING PRACTICE Instead of putting a lid on our students' energy, we can channel it. (Dan Montoya - elementary school teacher, 1997)

Theory and practice have long had a misunderstood relationship. While
teaching should be
guided, of course, by relevant research and consequent theory, this should not be
seen as a mechanical relationship. Thoughtful educators realize that
practice adjusted is essentially new theory, and that the classroom
itself is, in a sense, a laboratory of human experience. In short,
teaching
should be a melding of both theory and practice. Below is presented some evidence of my interpretation of the
relationship between theory and practice, preparation and improvisation,
organization and flexibility, skill and art.
