LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY

We must remember that neither global imperatives nor deficit hysteria change the fundamental purpose of education: to liberate and empower, not to soothe, subdue, or train ... the key to the future is not technology or information, but the growth in complexity of the moral questions we face.

(Heather-Jane Robertson, 1997)

Educators need to expand the notions of education by connecting with, and taking a leading role in the world. Expanding the walls of the classroom allows teachers to utilize the wide variety of resources available in the community. Expanding the concept of the classroom, in turn, ensures that teachers are up to date and involved in the various needs and concerns of the society. Research also shows that linking school and home, offering a variety of models, and making the curriculum "real", is not only beneficial cognitively for students, but socially as well. Below are some of the artifacts which I feel reflect my commitment to teaching, and to the wider world within which all teaching practice is embedded.
