One of the most effective tools that educators can use to encourage and facilitate both the affective and cognitive development of our students is through the use of group work. Structured group work places students in social situations in which they must interact, negotiate, and find meaning with fellow students. These situations, far from being too chaotic or playful, in fact need a highly structured format - educators need to be well organized to make these situations educationally relevant and socially meaningful. Below is an example of the amount of organization required to complete a learning center. This example is for a grade 2 unit on movement and simple machines.

Grade 2 Science: Movement: Simple Machines (Learning Center)

Grade 2 Science: Movement: Wheel and Axle (Learning Center)

Any Grade: Science - Simple Machines Bulletin Board (pdf)
