The Number 5
Every number has a meaning. There is a book by E.W. Bullinger called "Number in Scripture" that talks of the significance of numbers in God's Word.
A few year ago I wanted to get some insight into the number 5. So I started searching the Scriptures and basically what I found is that the number 5 has to do with two opposites. this is what I found:
First of all, you need to understand that the Bible is organized into sections. To find out more about how the Bible is organized, go to www.biblewheel.com.
Now, the bible has 5 books of Wisdom (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs). It also has 5 books of Major Prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel).
When I started looking to find insight into the number 5 I had this idea: What if I went to the 5th book of Wisdom (Song of Songs) and went to the 5th chapter and the 5th verse? And then, what if I went to the 5th book of Major Prophets (Daniel) and went to the 5th chapter and the 5th verse? Then, what if I compared those verses and see what kinds of things they have in common. So first I went to Daniel 5:5 and I read:
this is the Bible Wheel
"Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote."
-Daniel 5:5
I wasn't sure what this verse had to do with the number 5, except I did notice that it mentioned the fingers of a human hand, and a human hand has 5 fingers, but other than that I couldn't think of anything.
So then I went to Song of Songs 5:5 and I read:
"I arose to open for my lover, and my hands dripped with myrrh, my fingers with flowing myrrh, on the handles of the lock."
-Song of Songs 5:5
When I read this I thought, "My goodness, these verses have absolutely nothing to do with each another! They have nothing in common whatsoever!" But one thing I did notice was that this verse also mentioned the word fingers. So I thought that maybe the word fingers had some significance here, and I decided to look for some other verses in the books of Song of Songs and Daniel that mentioned fingers. I started scanning through the book of Song of Songs looking for another verse with the word fingers. I couldn't find any. I kept scanning and scanning, and after awhile I started to get sick of looking through this book. It was too mushy. It was so full of romance and love and all this gushy stuff. I thought, "I'd like to scan the book of Daniel instead, where it talks about thrones and establishments, and kings, and war, and respect, and more manly themes. I'm getting tired of this girly book.
So I went over to the book of Daniel and started scanning looking for the word "fingers." I wasn't finding it. I was so glad to get into the "manly" book of Daniel and away from all that girly stuff. But then after awhile, this book started scaring me. It was so frightening. Everthing in the book has to do with stuff like: seeing a vision of the Lord and being terrified, or kings being dethroned, or being throne into a lion's den or a fire, or being forced to worship a statue or you'll die, or four horrible beasts where the fourth one is most terrifying because it devours the earth.I wanted to go back to the book of Song of Songs where its warm and comforting.
So I did. I went back to the book of Song of Songs and oh was it comforting. It was like the sun came out again and I felt peace again. this book was so delightful and refreshing. The whole time you're safe in the courtyard of Solomon far away from all harm. It talks about fruit trees and incense and lilies and little foxes. Everything is so happy and wonderful. I can just see Bambi hopping along through the courtyard. But then after awhile I started getting sick of all this mushy lovey-dovey stuff. It was just too much of all this romantic stuff, I couldn't take it anymore. And I still couldn't find the word fingers anywhere.
So I found myself going back and forth between these two books. It was kind of like when you wash your hands in one of those sinks where theres one faucet for the cold, and another faucet for the hot. You wash your hands one one and you hands start freezing, so you go to the hot water and it feels good at first, but then your hands start burning. So you go back to the cold, and its so refreshing, but then your hands  start freezing again. These two books are complete opposites!
Eventually I got to a concordance and found the the only place that the word "fingers" is written in either book is in chapter 5 verse 5. And there are 5 fingers on a human hand. Then it made sense why they both are opposite eachother. Two extremes go hand in hand.
"Do not be overrighteous, neither be overwise-why destroy yourself?
Do not be overwicked, and do not be a fool- why die before your time?
It is good to
grasp the one and not let go of the other. The man who fears God will avoid all extremes (or will follow them both."
-Eccesiastes 7:16-18

Two Extremes Go Hand in Hand
=
So the number 5  has to do with two opposites, two complimentary extremes that go together,
Now, I also found that the
Roman numeral 5 is a V which is kind of an image of two people holding hands:
I decided to look further into the number 5 so I went to the very first "5" I could think of. Genesis chapter 1 verse 5: the fifth verse of the bible. This is what it said:
"God called the light 'day,' and the darkness he called 'night.' And there was evening, and there was morning-the first day."
-Genesis 1:5
Here in this verse is the same idea-two opposites: light and darkness, day and night, evening and morning.
V
V
V
light     darkness
day    night
evening     morning
Then I decided to look up the 5th chapter of the bible, Genesis 5. I started reading:
"This is the written account of Adam's line.

When God created man, he made him in
the likeness of God. He created them male and female and blessed them. And when they were created, he called them 'man.'"
-Genesis 5:1,2
Here in chapter 5 there is the same idea-two opposites: male and female. When the two come together, they are no longer two, but just one "man." This love relationship is the likeness of God, because "God is love."
V
male     female
"Man"
The likeness of God is the same idea of two opposites. Jesus is the lion, but he is also the lamb. He is the king, but also the servant of all. He is the Son of God, but also the Son of Man. He is a God of justice, but also of mercy. He is great, but also terrible. Psalm 18:11 says, "He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him-the dark rain clouds of the sky." But then in the very next verse it says, "Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced, with hailstones and bolts of lightning."

I decided to look further into the number 5. I went to the 5th book of the bible (Deuteronomy) and to the 5th chapter. Deuteronomy 5 talks about the Ten Commandments. I went to the 5th commandment and it said:
"Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you."
-Deuteronomy 5:16
So here we see the same idea -two opposites: Father and Mother. This one is very significant and important. This verse isn't just talking about honoring your father and mother, but even more than that, we need to honor the marriage relationship, for this relationship is the foundation of all life on earth.
V
father     mother
Later on I also looked further into the number 5. Just what exactly was created on the 5th day of creation? In Genesis 1:20-23 we read that God created the creatures of the sea and the birds of the air on the fifth day, but it wasn't until the sixth day that he created the land animals. So on the sixth day of creation, the same day as man, God created all the animals on land-the animals on our level. But on the 5th day He created the sea creatures down in the depths, and the birds up in the heights. So we see the same idea-two opposites: the birds in the heights and the sea creatures in the depths.
V
birds in the heights     sea creatures in the depths
Later on I had another idea come to me. What is the 55th verse of the bible? The 55th verse of the bible is Genesis 2:24:
"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh."
-Genesis 2:24
Again we see the same idea-two opposites: father and mother, man and wife.
V
father     mother
V
man     wife
We see this same design of two complimentary opposites all throughout the bible including:

The fifth verse
The fifth chapter
The fifth commandment
The fifth day of creation
The fifty fifth verse
The fifth book of Wisdom
The fifth book of Major Prophets

and probably many many more that I have yet to find.
I also found out that the Declaration of Independance was signed by fifty five men, but I'm not sure what that has to do with anything.
