Apologetics (Questions and Answers)
Isn't it obvious the Earth is millions of years old?
God is like the Sun.
When I was a junior in high school, there was a guy who sat next to me in Earth Science class, and he said, "Hey Nathan, you wanna argue religion?" I said "No," but he was going to argue with me anyway. He said that God is like the sun, but the sun has a hole in it, therefore the sun isn't perfect, therefore God isn't perfect, therefore God isn't real. Now, there is a verse in proverbs 26:4 that says, "Do not answer a fool according to his folly or you will be like him yourself." But then the very next verse says, "Answer a fool according to his folly, or else he will be wise in his own eyes." Well, I didn't know what to say to him. I mean, it was such a stupid argument. Why should I say anything? So I said nothing in response. But then about four years later, I was thinking back on it and I had an answer. You see, God is like the sun. John chapter 1 verse 4 says that in Jesus is the light of men. Well, the sun is the light of men. Revelation 1:16, John says, "His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance." It's true! God is like the sun. But the reason God has a hole is not because of His imperfection, but rather, Isaiah says:
"he was pierced for our transgressions." -Isaiah 53:5
You know, just because something has a hole in it, doesn't mean that it's imperfect. Can you imagine if you went to Dunkin' Donuts and you ordered a glazed? Then imagine saying, "Oh man, it's got a hole in it! It's not perfect. I want my money back!" What good would a lifesaver be to a drowning soul if a lifesaver had no hole? Jesus is a lifesaver. If Jesus didn't have that hole in his side-if he didn't have those holes in his hands and his feet, then he wouldn't be able to save us. Well, no wonder Revelation 4:8 says:
