A bit of a hot-head, Barrett prefers brute strength to agile and swift attacks. His right hand has been replaced by a prosthetic gun grafted directly onto his arm. Physically Barrett is a real powerhouse with many long-range attacks, which can be extremely useful in long boss battles. However, his physical prowess is a trade off against his poor magical skill, but later in the game his monstrous endurance can come in very handy.

Barrett is the focused and determined leader of AVALANCHE, the rebels fighting the destructive policies of the Shinra Corporation, which is damaging the planet through its mining of the energy source, Mako. He hired Cloud out of desperate need of help with their situation. Barrett lost his wife, Myrna, when his hometown Corel was destroyed by Shinra, and he now lives with his beloved daughter Marlene. Despite this great tragedy, his outlook is generally positive.
