How
To Get Around If You're A Woman Masquerading As A Man
- Guest lecturer: Mary
Read.
Ms Read was so adept
at hiding her sex that no one guessed she was a woman. Captain Johnson
recorded the meeting of Mary Read and Anne Bonny:
Mary Read's Sex was not so much as suspected by any Person on board till Anne Bonny, who was not altogether so reserved in Point of Chastity, took a particular Liking to her; in short, Anne Bonny took her for a handsome young Fellow, and for some Reasons best known to herself, first discovered her Sex to Mary Read; Mary Read knowing what she would be at, and being very sensible of her own Incapacity that Way, was forced to come to a right Understanding with her, and so to the great Disappointment of Anne Bonny, she let her know she was a Woman also; but this Intimacy so disturb'd Captain Rackham, who was the Lover and Gallant of Anne Bonny, that he grew furiously jealous, so that he told Anne Bonny, he could cut her new Lover's Throat, therefore, to quiet him, she let him into the Secret also.
Translation:
Mary was going really well at pretending to be a bloke; so well that Anne Bonny (who was a bit of a slut) said "Phwoorr, gotta get me some o' that!" Mary figured that she couldn't serve Anne in the particular way that Anne had in mind, so had to come out. Anne was crushed, and came out, too. In the meantime, Jack Rackham had noticed that Anne was giving the eye to the 'handsome young lad' and was so going to kill Mary. Mary let him in on the secret too - presumably there was much baring of bosoms involved in these proceedings.
Female
Pirates and Transvestism: a Feminist Agenda

for telling Calico Jack Rackham that she was sorry to see him there, but
'if had fought like a Man, he need not have been hang'd like a Dog'.
