College Of The White Dragon
Membership
A Druid Gwyddon College is a closely linked family and what brings us together is our sense of kindredship we share with the Celtic Triads and with each other. When we take a new member into the hearth there are certain traits we will look for.
* We offer a trial period for any new aspirant, that is the Seekers program. Almost anyone can go through our Seekers program which lasts for one year and a day. To enter this path a new dedicant must also agree and accept our *laws of- harmony* our *by-laws* and they will be informed of what we look for in a new dedicant that will help them to become a core-member.We encourage the new dedicant to ask questions and show understanding. During this time the new dedicant will begin their journey along the path of Druidry. They will also begin to learn about ritual set up, tools, meditation, journeying, our cosmology, healing patterns, and our tradition.
* When we take new Seekers we first spend some time with them and learn to understand what they are seeking. Are they in full agreement with the by laws and the laws of harmony? Do they show eagerness to learn all they can? Why do they seek membership? Do they ask many questions and show true interest? Do they understand that this is not a path for wimps and that it requires work, personal dedication, and an ability to work for the Grove and with the Grove. Are they ready to make a few personal sacrifices for the benefit of themselves and the Hearth? Are they responsible and show up on time? If they have an understanding and show these traits this is good, and they are ready, then we celebrate and we will help them to feel welcome. If some of these areas seem a little gray and we are not sure if this person who wants membership is being true with us or themselves, then we may need to give them some more time to understand the personal commitment it takes for membership.
* The reason this is important for us to check these traits is that when we put work into building a Grove, we want it to run smoothly. We are also building a community, a Grove, a tribe. We need the aspirants to gain knowledge at a steady pace that is right for them but doesn't hold the rest of the members behind. Most of all, we don't need someone there who comes only for themselves or to see what they can get out of it. A college needs responsible people that we can depend on to follow through with their tasks. When we have to make up for someone who flakes off, it will end up draining our energy, and the Grove's energy. If a member is not in reality check with themselves, it can be distracting and take away from the overall experience of everyone at the Nemeton. If this continues to happen it can break up the Grove. Members need to be self reliant and emotionally stable. Sometimes we think it's better to have a smaller number of Druids in a Grove that are all responsible and knowledgeable, somewhere among five to ten, rather than a larger number like thirty. Too many can make it very hectic on the instructors and it's not as easy to know each person well enough when the numbers get out of hand. At that point you might as well set up a school and file for non--profit status.
