Undara and the Atherton Tablelands

We were supposed to be picked up by bus from our hotel the next morning to go to Undara, but the bus was cancelled because flooding had closed the route. However, the Undara people arranged a car hire for us and we drove up by another road. This was probably a much better deal, as we could stop when and where we wanted!

We were heading inland for a few hundred kilometres to stay for three nights in the Australian bush on the Undara Experience. The accommodation was in old railway carriages. We felt that this whole experience was very similar to the African bush -- just swap the gum trees for msasas and the kangaroos for impala -- and even breakfast was round a campfire. We were so glad to have included this in our holiday.

The lava tubes were fascinating -- you'll have to read about these on the Web!

We drove back to Cairns through the Atherton Tablelands -- a quite different area with green rolling hills, waterfalls, and huge fig trees. We left the car in Cairns in the evening and were take by a courtesy bus 60 kilometres north to our hotel in Port Douglas.
