Perth

First, here are some general Web sites that we've found about this area:

We started our Australian holiday in Perth. As we had friends there, we did not need to stay in paid accommodation (Thanks, Alma!). Near where we were staying was Pinaroo Cemetery, where we saw our first kangaroos, who came out at dusk to munch the grass and the flowers on the gravestones!

A good way to see some of the attractions of the city centre is to travel on the tram. It drops you off at selected places and you can board it again later. In this way we visited the Perth Mint, Burswood Casino Hotel, Kings Park. We had a late lunch at Fraser's.

On another day we visited Fremantle, which is very good for shopping. We went to the Shipwrecks Museum among other places.

Another day we spent at Rottnest Island where we saw the quokkas.

Yet another day was spent with a friend who took us to Cohunu Koala Park in the morning. Here you can have your picture taken while cuddling a koala (should you wish). You can also feed kangaroos, see emus and wombats, and get an introduction to some of the colourful Australian birds. It's a good way to get to know Australian wildlife if they are new to you. From there we went to Penguin Island where we spent the afternoon, learning about the little penguins and watching them being fed.

Railway to Sydney

We took the Indian Pacific Railway to Sydney, that took three nights and four days. The train makes selected stops, and you can opt to take a short bus tour around the towns where it stops. In this way we visited Kalgoorlie, Adelaide and Broken Hill. We also stopped at a place called Cook, in the Nullarbor Plain, where the temperature was about 45°C.
