WHY walk? (are you crazy? my cousin Trina asks...)

The reason is two-fold.

The first reason...
The physical challenge of walking 60 miles in 3 days! I know I can walk. But how about 20 miles a day for 3 days for a cause for the greater good? The thought is amazing to me. The feeling is similar to those of people who want to climb Mt. Everest. Pushing ourselves to the limit and beyond. What a concept! It's exciting!

The second reason...
The cause which is research towards an AIDS vaccine. Although I don't know anyone who has died of AIDS, I do know someone who was diagnosed HIV positive. I found out about 10 years ago but because of AIDs research this person is alive today with medicines developed. Isn't that incredible!

The February 2002 issue of Real Simple magazine had an article entitled "one big, happy family" that was about a couple who adopted babies who have HIV. The babies were not expected to live beyond the first year. Yet with much love, care and medicines the children who are currently ages 6-14 are alive today.

If the AIDs vaccine can alleviate pain or elongate life for those infected with the AIDs virus or who are HIV positive, I'd love the chance to help. I'm not a scientist. I'm not financially rich. However, I do have feet that can participate in the 3-day AIDs walk.

Won't you join me in this effort and show your support.

Donations as of 7/31/02:  $2285.00
(total needed to participate in 3-day walk: $2,200.00)

My Journal...

8/6/02, Tuesday
It's August and I've finally got around to wrapping up this site. There is so much more to say but I wanted to post this much for now. Maybe I'll write a little more in depth later, maybe not. In any case, if you want to know more feel free to email me and I'd be happy to share more...

I managed to go for a walk on Sunday after a rather long break. Sleeping in can be so delicious. Of course, the fact that the mornings have been hot and humid doesn't make good walking weather. As an alternative to the walks, I've been swimming in the evenings with Sydney.

I picked up the tickets for the Bluefish Baseball game that we'll be going to on August 18. Four of Sydney's preschool buddies will be joining us for this fundraiser event! Thanks to preschooler's Nik, Brad, Paige & Gordon! See ya there!

I've added maps of the routes obtained from fellow walker, Crispian's site courtesy of Mike from the Route Marking Crew.

Day Three has been posted.

8/1/02, Thursday
I've got myself at the computer again. It's been a hot week! This morning is cool enough that I can sit in the attic to type. We gotta get an air conditioner up here.

Reflecting on the walk weekend now, I find myself only remembering the good things. I guess this is a sign that overall...I had a great time! Future walkers should feel free  to ask me pointed questions for the nitty-gritty stuff.

Hip hip hooray! Yahoooooooo! Yipeeee!
I've met minimum! Eti gave me some of her last donations to put into my account. A HUGE THANKS TO ETI!

Day Two has been posted.

7/28/02, Sunday
I'm suffering through post-walk syndrome.
Symptoms include the following:

1. Lethargic - inability to go out on a routine exercise walk
2. Flashbacks of the experience and people met along the way
3. Daily visits to the 3-day AIDS Walk message board
4. Overwhelming need to signup and participate in similar events

Good news. I received our pictures in the mail. There is one more disposable camera that must be developed. I'll probably get this set next Friday.

I also received a package from Joyce. Batherapy - bathe away aches and pains. Thanks. I'll give it a try tonight.

I've posted Day One musings. Enjoy.

Also, pictures are up on both Eti & Phyllis' pages.

For more pictures from fellow walkers sites go to the inspiration page.

Walk is over and I'm still writing...
Some loyal readers have been wondering where's the beef????
I'm getting my thoughts together and waiting for pictures to develop before posting entries regarding the BIG WALK. Let me say that it was AMAZING! And, YES, I would do it again!

Check back next week for complete postings. I plan on working on this site over the weekend.

Just wanted to give another BIG THANK YOU to all of our sponsors! Thanks for helping us make it happen!

We did the talk and did the WALK!
I woke up this morning feeling pretty good. The feet feel better and I'm looking forward to relaxing today.

12pm-2:30pm - click here

Here we are! It's Day Zero and we've got to register ourselves and watch a Safety and Orientation Video to prepare for tomorrow's event. We arrived early and went through the process pretty quickly as there was not much of a crowd.

Along with Stay Alert. Stay Alive. I brought home a new mantra for the walk from the required video we watched -- Be Kind. Don't Whine.

And now the count down begins. I still need to do some last minute packing and emailing before resting for the evening. Eti's friend Amanda can take the three of us to the Opening Ceremony and Starting point which will be the same site as Day Zero. But first, Keith and Sydney need to drive me up to meet them in Stamford at about 4:45am.

I got some more good luck wishes from family and friends. Thanks for the support guys!

We begin THE WALK at 7am.

I'm signing off for now, until Monday...

7/17/02, Wednesday
Slept in again. I've been taking it easy and primed for Day One, Friday. I did do a light walk during lunch.

Goody! I broke the $2,000 mark! Phyllis was able to receive a contribution to help me with my minimum from friend Michelle. Thanks soooo much!

I've finished doing the loads of laundry for the week and will pack some clean socks into the trusty backpack.

Received some good luck wishes via email from my book club buddies as well as some pointers on keeping the feet blister-free. Thanks gals!

7/16/02, Tuesday
Cool morning. I slept in. I seemed to have nipped the cold. I'll retire early again tonight. During the my lunch break I walked around Wilton after I picked up Carol Anne's contribution via baseball ticket sales. Thanks again to Carol Anne for her efforts!

Good news! Phyllis was able to get a team donation which I promptly added to my account to help cover my minimum.

Tonight I will be getting items together for my backpack. I'll also prepare donation forms for Day 0 which is on Thursday.

7/15/02, Monday
Usual break day. Did a bit of gardening before getting ready for the day as the morning was quite cool.

Uh-oh woke up with a touch of a scratchy throat. I'm going to bed early tonight. Hope I can nip this cold-thing in the bud. Phyllis came to work with a touch of a cold as well.

Phyllis and I spent our lunch walk in CVS. We purchased some last minute items to pack for the 3-day walk which happens in 3 days!

Eti has reached the minimum for the walk! Way to go!

Now it's up to me to fulfill my minimum...

7/14/02, Sunday
Walked the usual Calf Pasture Beach route with Gloria. The day was a bit humid but not hot and sunny. We saw lots of people clamming near the Calf Pasture dock. Must be wonderful to have fresh clams for dinner.

Got a call from Carol Anne this evening. She let me know that the kids from the 4H Club of Wilton were able to sell the batch of baseball tickets I sent her. Great job! Cheers to the 4H Club Members!

Hey-hey. It's down to the final four days!

7/13/02, Saturday
The last training day weekend. Whew! Spent the day with Sydney running errands and then poolside. So, no official walking for me today.

Got an encouraging and supportive phone message from one of the AIDS walk crew members, Stephen. He has been assigned hydration duties. Look forward to meeting him!

7/12/02, Friday
Yet another cool morning. I'm getting worried. Does this mean that next week will be a blazer! Will it be the dreaded hot-hazy-humid weather again with a downpour of rain and thunderstorms towards the end of the week?

7/11/02, Thursday
Another cool morning. The lunch walk was quite cool as well. Who's complaining with great weather like this?

7/10/02, Wednesday
What a cool morning. Such a refreshing feeling after last night's rain. Walked over to the Harbor View area. A friendly dog wanted to walk alongside me for a bit. It was a cute doggie who is part Golden Retriever and part Chow. She had a big fluffy tail and her name is Baby.

7/9/02, Tuesday
Break day. Went to the dentist for my 6-month check and cleaning first thing this morning. As Sydney is still ill today, I decided to take the day off. Spent the morning getting a flyer together for a Bridgeport Bluefish Baseball fundraising event. I plan on distributing the flyers at Sydney's preschool this week. The flyer invites people to join Sydney at her first baseball game experience. Part of the money from ticket sales goes to benefit the AIDS 3-day walk. I'm hoping some Syd's preschool buddies will join us for a day of local baseball in August.

Hallelujah! Got Maysoun & Ray's contribution online today! Thanks guys!

7/8/02, Monday
Nice cool morning. A haze continues to loom overhead. Apparently it is the smoke blown over from a big fire from Quebec, Canada. Took a spin around Veteran's Park and headed over to Washington Street to walk by the closed shops. Read a couple restaurant menus along the way.

Sydney caught a cold over the weekend and is pretty lethargic and contagious-looking. We decided to keep her home today.

Hooray! Received M.E.'s donation in the mail today! Thanks soooo much!

7/7/02, Sunday
Break day. Oh loyal readers, please don't me discouraged regarding my training. We had guests over the weekend. A long awaited visit from relatives. Eric, Judy & Kate were over for pool and party time with us.

Monday will be the final big push for the 3-day event. Hope the weather stays cool like today for conducive walking.

7/6/02, Saturday
Phyllis and I joined a Palotta Teamworks training walk in Westport. Mary was our leader. We headed to Compo Beach and back. The weather was great with a bit of a breeze. There were about 25 of us present.

My battle with blisters continues. Although I protected my known areas well, I managed to obtain a blister in two new spots!

7/5/02, Friday
Ah, the morning was a nice one. The heat spell is over for now. It was in the upper 90s these past days with humidity thrown in. I tried out these toe blister protection thingees. They seemed to work pretty well. I'm definitely going to pack them for the 3 day walk.

Yipeeeeeeee! Just received my friend Ken's generous online donation to my cause! Thanks a bunch!

7/4/02, Thursday
Break day. yet again. What can I say? It's a holiday and the weather has been really hot. Ugh!

7/3/02, Wednesday
Break day. again? yup. We were up last night in Gloria's backyard watching fireworks blast off from Calf Pasture Beach. Very buggy experience as I got eaten up despite slathering on the bug lotion. Also, it's another 3H day today. I need to get up earlier in the morning tomorrow to walk in cooler climes.

Exciting news! Maggie has become a sponsor. I received her contribution in the mail today! Yay! Thanks!

7/2/02, Tuesday
Oh my, the start of a 3H day, hot-hazy-humid. I felt pretty lethargic during the walk.

During the lunch walk with Phyllis, we were definitely melting onto the sidewalk.

Good news! Received Cousin Marilyn's contribution in the mail! Thanks sweetie!

7/1/02, Monday
Break day.

Yessss! received donations in the mail and online! Thanks to Cousin Eileen and friends Anita, Joyce & James!
