Velvet April Journal

4/30/02, Tuesday
Last day of the month! The walk event draws closer! I went the Harbor View route which I've dubbed the nature route here in my neighborhood. I came across four deer bounding away from me.  Also,  I spotted 3 beautiful white egrets standing in the marsh.

As I walked I listened to a CD that I picked up from the walk expo. The Joy of Walking Well by Ann Rodiger. I didn't get through the whole of it but it was alright so far. The CD is mostly visualization and awareness of the body while walking.

Eti managed to get more sponsors over the weekend. I gotta get on the ball and work on my fundraising this week!

4/29/02, Monday
Today is my designated "rest" day. I've been keeping to the schedule of walking Tuesday through Sunday. However, I did some cross-training in the evening. Popped my Taebo workout dvd into the computer and followed along.

4/28/02, Sunday
We got rained out! The team was pre-registered to participate in a 3 mile walk of the annual Westport Minute Man race. Due to heavy rains, we opted out. Eti and her friend actually arrived at the site but got soaked while talking to the volunteers. Who knew the weather was not going to be cooperative!

Instead of the race, Keith, Sydney and I spent the day walking around the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I've been wanting to see the Italian Father-Daughter exhibit of Orazio and Artemisia. What a treat!

4/26/02, Friday
Another cold morning with hoar frost on the grass to boot! However, it was a bright morning with birds singing and I even heard someone's rooster crowing. I kept singing Sydney's latest favorite song which is from a Burl Ive's CD. I'll have to find out the title. Here's the ditty I kept repeating...

When you walk the streets
you'll have no cares
if you walk the lines
and not the squares.
As you go through life
make this your goal
watch the donut
not the hole!

4/25/02, Thursday
I was swamped with work since Monday. ahhhhhh. Got off of my routine walking schedule and hope to get back into full swing Friday morning. I walked for a mile on Wednesday but missed today. Instead I did a Taebo workout in the afternoon.

Phyllis and Eti are coming along really well with obtaining sponsors. They're both past their minimum halfway mark. I just added more sponsors to their lists this evening. Great job, gals!

I haven't had a chance to focus on my own account. I plan to get some letters out this weekend to beef up my sponsorship list as well.

We got an email from a fellow walker, Keri, who is planning on putting together a press release type package to send out to the local papers. Along with spreading the word out about the event we hope to gain some more walkers and possibly some sponsors (keeping the fingers crossed).

4/23/02, Tuesday
The weather is going backwards. Brrrrr is what I said this morning. Had a hard time getting up as I had another late night working. And the same tonight -- I brought home some work. It's another one of those hectic weeks! I haven't been able to get the cross-training into my afternoons. Maybe later this week. I hope to do some Taebo.

4/22/02, Monday
I was pleasantly surprised with a mysterious donation over the weekend. After puzzling over who it could be I got an update email from Palotta Teamworks this afternoon informing me of the current status of my account. Thanks to Anne for her contribution!

4/21/02, Sunday
Instead of a group walk, we had a group field trip into New York City for the 3-Day walk Expo for AIDS and Breast Cancer walkers. Got a lot of info on various aspects of the event. Eti and I got a free chiropractic treatment. It was our first times to get our necks and hips cricked. What a weird feeling. We didn't have time to get the free massage which would have been relaxing I bet. Phyllis managed to score a new sleeping bag. We attended two talks - one on Dressing and Stretching and the other on Nutrition. Most of the crowd consisted of women who were going to do the Avon Breast Cancer 3-day in October. I'm thinking of volunteering some time to that event after the AIDS walk.

4/20/02, Saturday
I've been having technical difficulties uploading this site via Yahoo.com -- in case you may have been checking in and noticing no updates. I have indeed posted my dailies but was not able to upload it for your viewing until now.

I was able to do a nice 3 mile walk this morning because Keith took the day off from work today. It was a cool morning as I headed out to Veteran's Park and into part of East Norwalk.

4/19/02, Friday
Ahhh, a nice cool spring morning. Great walking weather but for some reason I couldn't get into it. I managed a short walk to Harbor View. Today is Phyllis birthday and instead of our lunch walk we went to lunch! We had a celebratory meal at Bluewater Cafe.

4/18/02, Thursday
Yipee! got another pledge! Thanks to Jovy & Cristian!
It was another warm morning. Spent most of the morning thinking of what all I had to do at work. It's been pretty stressful this week -- a lot of deadlines with too little time.

4/16/02, Wednesday

Very warm morning today. I actually walked in my T-shirt and swish pants which are rather thin. The birds were really loud this morning. Upon leaving my front doorstep I walked into a cacophony of birdsongs.

4/16/02, Tuesday
Did quite a long walk this morning as Keith didn't had a dental appointment and didn't have to leave the house until 7:45am. I got up earlier than my usual 5:30am and walked over to Veteran's Park and to the Heritage Park entrance. It was a warm summer-like morning. I figured out another one of the birds I've seen in the area -- Merganser.

4/15/02, Monday
Took a spin around Heritage Park with Sydney in the afternoon before driving home. The warm weather was so inviting.

4/14/02, Sunday
The team of Phyllis, Gloria and Velvet met at Westport's Compo Beach. Lots of fellow walkers on the route. Because Compo Beach is quite small in perimeter we took to some residential streets. We walked by amazing homes and beautiful flowering trees -- apple blossoms, cherry blossoms and magnolia.

4/13/02, Saturday
Walked through a blanket of mist this morning and came home with wet hair. The weather was pretty warm so it was a nice walk. Didn't see much because of the mist. However, it sure made for a different setting. The way I'm going these days, I think I'll be able to do the 20 miles/day in 10-12 hours. My pedometer clocks me at doing a 1/2-hour mile while walking at a comfortable speed.

Today I'm going to explore the possibilities of companies who sponsor events via the internet. Gotta work on getting my donation quota...

4/12/02, Friday
Today's path is the one toward Harbor View. It takes me to the edge of this salt marsh is located at the end of my street which is about two houses away. Located at the edge of the marsh is the entrance to The Norwalk Generating Station where a cop car is always situated in the morning to check people driving in-out of the facility. As I walked by I overheard the cop greeting and checking people in. The consistent comment I heard was the TGIF type. Ah yes, Friday!

4/11/02, Thursday
YAY! Just got another sponsor. Thanks Rashna! Didn't make it out in the morning because I was up late on Wednesday. I was working overtime and was feeling pretty stressed. I did a lunch walk and took Sydney for an afternoon walk at Heritage Park before coming home. We saw lots of rowing crews cruising up and down Norwalk River.

4/10/02, Wednesday
The magnolia trees are starting to bloom. What a magnificent sight they are. Walked to Stroffolino Bridge and back. This walk includes a street that my father-in-law dubbed as the "roller coaster" but he actually pronounced it as "rollie" coaster. It is hilly but not like the kinds you find in San Francisco.

4/9/02, Tuesday
UGH, it was dark this morning due to the time change on Sunday. However, the weather was surprisingly warm. I have to definitely eliminate one layer of clothing for tomorrow's walk.  Pretty uneventful. It's trash pickup day so there were lots of garbage bags and trash cans sitting on the sidewalks. Gotta remember to walk a different route on Tuesdays.

4/8/02, Monday
Got some family sponsors. Thanks to Johnny, Pam, Justin and Ted! I cross-trained this evening with my TaeBo dvd. Pretty fun stuff. The TaeBo workout incorporates aerobics and kickboxing.

4/7/02, Sunday
The team did a good 6 miles in the sunny but cold morning at Waveny Park in New Canaan. Gloria let us know that she will continue to join us in our Sunday walks. However, she will not be able to participate in the July walk. I've adjusted our team goal donation and the site to reflect this change. Phyllis was ill today and could not come to the walk. But she was able to capture more donations! It's still slow-going for both Eti and me.

4/6/02, Saturday
Spent the day walking with Sydney around the Maritime Aquarium. Had to stop and admire the jellyfish exhibit.

4/5/02, Friday
I walked by a few houses with real estate signs in the neighborhood. Now is the time for home shopping. I've been eyeing a couple places in the Shorefront Park area. This area is right along the coast of the Norwalk River. When I called to find out the price for one place it turned out to be up in the $800,000+ range. Oh, how I would love a home on the coast.

4/4/02, Thursday
More great news! 3 more sponsors -- Jean, M.E. and Rena -- Thanks a bunch! This really made my day. This morning I was feeling a bit low. Despite the bright sunny morning, the motivation level was down. The walk was shorter than usual. Tonight I'm feeling pretty good and raring to go at it again tomorrow morning. Could be the oncoming of my moon time affecting me???

4/2/02, Tuesday
Great news again! Phyllis and I met with Nancy of Simply Organized and got lots of ideas and thoughts regarding the walk. She participated in a 3-day Avon Breast Cancer walk last year so had first-hand experience. Along with being generous with her thoughts she also gave us donations. Thanks a bunch, Nancy!

4/1/02, Monday
Exciting news! My company, Irving Levin Associates, Inc. made a donation for three of us - Phyllis, Eti and me!
