My Journal...

6/30/02, Sunday
This morning was a hot one again but we had some nice cool breezes. Gloria and Phyllis joined me today for a jaunt to Calf Pasture Beach. Eti was at a Tarrytown park with a friend doing her walk for the morning. Keri was planning on joining me as well but unfortunately did not get the directions to my place in time.

Oh my! Last day of the month! Time is going pretty quick.

6/29/02, Saturday
The morning was a nice one that got hot quickly. I was sweating come 8am. I did a few miles around Rowayton. I parked near Syd's future elementary school. They were doing something with the roofing. Stinky tar smells. Walked to Bayley Beach which smaller than I expected.

Zippidy-do-dah! I received Kristen's donation in the mail today! I'm slowly inching up to my minimum...

6/28/02, Friday
Break day. I worked on getting out a couple more fundraising letters.

Hooray! Cousin Marilyn is going to help me out! Thanks!

6/27/02, Thursday
Took a nice quiet walk to Village Creek beach. However, picked up some bug bites along the way. With the hot and humid weather these days, I have to remember to slather on the bug lotion.

Thank you Cousin Melanie and Andy! I received their donation in the mail today! I'm slowly reaching that halfway mark...

And, Mel's brother -- David Jr. has agreed to sponsor me today as well!

6/26/02, Wednesday
Lots of walkers, joggers and runners this morning -- mostly around Veteran's Park. I saw about 20 people. Usually I come across 5 fellow walkers. Walked in shorts today. Yup, the weather has finally turned.

6/25/02, Tuesday
Burnt sienna sky this morning. Booked it to Marvin Beach and back. Quite humid these days.

Got an email for Palotta Teamworks. Turns out that the event turnout is lower than expected. There are only about 1,100 participants and they were hoping for about 3,000 walkers. The good news is that the event will not be cancelled.

YAY! I'm signing in a former Irving Levin buddy onto my sponsor list...Kristen!

6/24/02, Monday
Break day. It's an early morning for me and I'm working on maintaining a couple of my websites and email. Will touch base with Phyllis and Eti today. They had dog sitting gigs over the weekend and weren't able to walk with me.

Thank you Auntie Lisa and Cousin Patrick! Got your check in the mail today!

I mailed out a couple more fundraising letters to the last of my batch. Keeping my fingers crossed for generous souls...

6/23/02, Sunday
The thick socks and vaseline worked! After my walk with Gloria today, my blister problems did not come into play. We had a fun walk that took us into Shady Beach and around Shorehaven Golf Course. Came across some groundhogs scurrying around.

Couldn't resist. At the market I picked up Prevention's Complete Book of Walking. I hope to pick up some interesting pointers.

Went into Sports Authority to possibly pickup some tank tops made of the coolmax or wicking type material. Got frustrated as I picked out 3 different styles all Large and they all were toooo tight! and they were Large! and Large was as high as the sizes went! Hey, body shape discrimination! Will have to check elsewhere.

Hip Hip! Got another sponsor! My good ole Parade Magazine buddy, Anita, emailed me with a wonderful pledge!

I received an email from crew member, Stephen. He sent some info to help with Eti's insurance problem. Thank you Stephen!

6/22/02, Saturday
Walked in Westport with Mary which was an official training walk. About 14 women showed up. My tendency was to drift to the back of the pack. I found that being in the back provided a sort of motivation to keep up with the group yet also have elbow room. The weather was nice and at the end I felt pretty refreshed. However, I seemed to have gotten a couple blisters at mile 4. I need to take some preventative measures tomorrow. When I spoke with Phyllis after the walk she suggested thicker socks along with the vaseline on the sensitive areas.

Got a call from Stephen, a crew member for the walk. He gave me encouragement and tips for the upcoming day! Neat-o.

6/21/02, Friday
Break day! again? Thought I'd spend the morning catching up with my journal entries here and with my email. Plus, I wanted to rest up for tomorrow's long walk. Shooting for 10+ miles with Phyllis and Eti.

I'm sweating it...still pending incoming donations and still need to work on getting more donations. I had every intention of doing some follow-up fundraising this week but totally went into a defunct. This weekend I must get a move on.

Phyllis has surpassed her minimum this week!

Eti has run into a problem with the required medical forms for the walk. Because she is not insured, she needs to drum up temporary coverage for the event. The one company recommended by Palotta Teamworks was not able to cover her due to an operation Eti had in the last 5 years. We'll be spending next week trying to resolve this.

6/20/02, Thursday
Explored into the East Norwalk area a bit more today. Went into some streets that off-shoot Veteran's Park. Some of the homes in this area were cute and quaint.

6/17/02, Wednesday
Was feeling out of sorts and woke up late for my walk. Took a quick spin to the Harbor View area.

6/17/02, Tuesday
Walked about Washington Street and was treated to a Galaxy of Stars! It so happens that a display of these huge decorated ceramic stars align the Heritage Park area. The display is a fundraiser -- don't know the cause.

Sydney took this picture of me in front of Star Reach. I thought it was quite appropo for us walkers...reaching for the stars.

And here is one that is the sign of the times. Sydney poses in front of Stars and Stripes.

I started creating a baseball game flyer to invite people to join us at a Bridgeport Bluefish baseball game in July.

6/17/02, Monday
Break day! Yeah! Got to sleep in some. Still need to get more sponsors! Working on the fundraising end of things tonight!

6/16/02, Sunday
Gloria and I headed out to Calf Pasture Beach again. Our walk started out with spitting rain. However, it was warm enough that it was comfortable walking. We also cruised through Marvin Beach which was a first for Gloria. Gak! Came home with another blister.

6/15/02, Saturday
Since rain was forecasted for today, Phyllis and I decided to meet at the Westport Fitness Edge gym for the day. I got to enter with Phyllis' guest pass. As Phyllis started out with her strength training workout, I participated in a Yoga class. Then we hit the treadmills for the next 3 hours. Whew! It was the first time I've spent more than 45 minutes on a treadmill.

6/14/02, Friday
Walked around the nearby neighborhoods today -- Village Creek and Harbor View. On this route I always see a Harbor View woman with her two Golden Retrievers. She's pretty friendly. We are always going in opposite directions. Maybe one day I'll walk and talk with her a bit.

Phyllis sent out an fundraising email blast today. Hope she gets good returns to help Eti and myself with our minimums. (crossing the fingers)

6/13/02, Thursday
Didn't make it out this morning. Stayed up last night watching the latest dvd release of Ocean's Eleven. Along with the movie I checked out the added features. Basically, I was up late enough that I wanted to sleep in. However, I actually planned it. You see I finally popped a blister on my left big toe which  I obtained by my Saturday walk. Since it is a bit sore, I thought I'd give my toe-feet a rest to heal. Will be back on track tomorrow.

6/12/02, Wednesday
Walked over to Marvin Beach in East Norwalk. It was closer than expected. Today was a muggy morning for muggles.

Almost got hit by a flying newspaper. I guess the newspaper boy-man-person was running late. His modes operandi was quite interesting to watch. Rarely do you see newspaper delivery done by bike. This guy was in a Silver Saturn zipping around to each house. With his hazards flashing he would stop long enough to fling a newspaper out of his window. Of course, throwing papers from a car is a short distance which answers my question as to why our newspapers don't make it onto our doorstep.

6/11/02, Tuesday
Did a good walk to Veteran's Park. Saw a huge billboard that said "Some detours are worth it" with a picture of a McDonald's breakfast sandwich. Without breakfast in me, my stomach was being heavily swayed by the ad. Gotta remember to take an energy bar along for instances like this.

As I walked across Stroffolino Bridge to get to the park, I noticed a car slowing down as it approached in the opposite direction. The middle-aged male driver was staring at me. Was he expecting me to lift up my tshirt and flash him? I mean really! Can't a woman walk down the street without being harassed like that. Oh yeah, I should also mention I got beeped at by another male driver. Geez!

More boat names collected...Harp and Logum.

At the park I came a cross a great piece of driftwood. I drove over to pick it up before going to work. It will make a wonderful addition to Sydney's snake tank.

6/10/02, Monday
Slept in this morning. Hey, it's my off day. Will get into gear again tomorrow.

Whooopeeeeeee! My brother Richard and his wife Jonathea plan to sponsor me! Thanks guys!

6/9/02, Sunday
Gloria and I walked to Calf Pasture Beach from our neighborhood. The weather was great again.

Great news! Auntie Lisa and Cousin Patrick have said they would like to become sponsors! The more the merrier!

I picked up my second pair of shoes for the walk today. It's another Saucony. I can't wait to break them in this week.

6/8/02, Saturday
Eti and I went on a Palotta Teamworks sponsored training walk held by Mary. It was held in Westport. We walked from downtown through a Golf Course to Compo Beach and back. The weather was absolutely beautiful and cool. Great walking temperature!

There was a good crowd of women walkers who attended. I saw about 30 women. I met a most interesting person on the walk. She is a Westporter named Margot. Although she is "retired and loving it" she is quite active in the community and in the baseball world. She will be walking in the Avon Breast Cancer 3 Day walk in October. It will be her 4th walk!

This is the first weekend of the back-to-back long walk training mode for myself.

6/7/02, Friday
I got rained out this morning. However, the afternoon cleared up and I took my usual lunch walk.

Good news! My college buddy Maysoun will be a sponsor! Thanks!

6/6/02, Thursday
Walked about Shorefront Park as I didn't want to encounter car traffic. I stayed in this residential area and did a couple loops within. Noticed more boat names...Holiday, Heat Wave and Key Largo. Got into the lunch walk again with Phyllis.

6/5/02, Wednesday
We drove back home to Connecticut today. After settling in again, we went out on errands. Didn't walk much today. Will have to get back into the routine of walking tomorrow!

After checking my email box, I found another sponsor! Thanks Kenneth!

And, I received an online donation from Auntie Edith and Cousin Astrid! Thanks again!

And, I'll be getting Uncle Johnny, Auntie Pam & Justin's donation in the mail this week!

Whoopeeeeeeeee! I'm past the $1,000 mark!

6/4/02, Tuesday
My birthday! Turned 34 today. After wrapping up the conference in the morning, I was free to do some site-seeing with Keith and Sydney in the afternoon. We walked around the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial which was really beautifully made of stones and waterfalls.

6/3/02, Monday
After conference meetings, I walked a couple miles down to the Lincoln Memorial to meet Keith and Sydney. Before heading back to the hotel we stopped by the Academy of Science building and visited the Einstein sculpture.

6/2/02, Sunday
Did a short jaunt around Dupont Circle in the evening before getting some dinner in the area. We're staying at the Mayflower Hotel in DC which is in the Dupont Circle area. Keith and Sydney were pretty tuckered out from walking all day checking out the sites at the various Smithsonian museums.

6/1/02, Saturday
Didn't walk this morning. Instead I'm getting reading to leave for Washington DC for an annual conference I must attend for work. My next post will be on Wednesday. However, I'll keep logs of the walks I do in DC.
