Obituary for Eli Yarnell

Source: The Tribune, Wauseon, Ohio;
published August 18, 1883.

Eli Yarnell died at the residence of his son-in-law - Henry B. Oldfield, in Wauseon on Thursday of this week, 16th inst., of Bright's disease of the kidneys. He had been afflicted with that dread disease for many years, and without knowing what the disease weas until it had grown dangerous. In the latter part of June he was prostrated with it, but rallied somewhat, and although against the advice of his wife and children at home, risked a visit to Toledo the last of July. Two weeks ago to-day he went with his son Ithamar, conductor on the Air Line road, to Elkhart. In a few days, from the exertion of the trip or from change of medicine he became reduced so as to oblige him to come home. he only reached his son-in-law's when he became unable to proceed further. A council of physicians was called, but they discovered at once that his death was certainly near at hand, which the result verified.

He was born in Wayne county, near Wooster, Nov. 3, 1825. When a young man he learned the blacksmith trade, which he has followed ever since. On June 15th, 1849, he married Miss susanna Wirick, which union was blessed with eleven children. In 1857 he unit'd with the Church of Christ, and remained a firm adherent to that faith until his death. He moved his family to this county in 1860, and settled on a farm some three and a half mile north-east of this place. He was kept busy at this trade most of the time, for he was an expert and his shop was sought for many miles around, from country and towns. There was never any doubt as to Eli Yarnell's position in reference to all matters of public interest, and he was firm as a rock in his convictions. A man of great integrity and kindly impulses, he alway possessed the highest respect of his acquaintances.

His wife and eight children survive him, namely:   Ithamar, Sarah Oldfield, Frank, Lucy, William, Grant, Laura and Allie - the latter, the youngest, being nine years of age. Also one brother and two sisters remain, viz:   Daniel Yarnell, residing near Napoleon, Jane Jones, residing on a farm adjoining his; and Nancy Funk, now a widow, in Wooster, O. The latter arrived at his bedside before his death, in time to be recognized, and remains to the funeral.

The funeral takes place to-day, (Saturday,) from the Disciples' church, at 10 o'clock, a. m., and will be attended by many sorrowing neighbors who will mingle their tears of regret and of sympathy for the relatives, with those of his family.

Obituary for Jane (Yarnell) Jones

Source: The Tribune, Wauseon, Ohio;
published Saturday, February 16, 1884.

Mrs. Jane Jones (nee Yarnell), wife of John Jones, died at her home three and a half miles northeast of this place, on Wednesday, and was buried yesterday. She was born in Fayette county, Pa., Feb. 15th, 1814, and would therefore have been seventy years old had she lived two days longer. Besides her husband she leaves five children to mourn her loss - Ithamar, Daniel, Judson, Talitha and Nancy. She was one of the best women that ever graced the earth - patient, meek, peaceable and peacemaker. At the time she joined the Church of Christ, over a quarter century ago, she evidently had as little to be forgiven as anybody before her, and since then has been an example for Christians. If she ever had an enemy we never heard of it.

Obituary for Lawrence "Rex" Yarnell

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune. San Diego, California;
published June 16, 2002.

On the verge of being drafted into the Army, Lawrence "Rex" Yarnell explored an option that reflected his interest in aviation: flight training in the Navy. He applied, passed the required exams and received his wings during World War II. It marked the beginning of a 31-year naval career that saw him fly bombing missions, earn a Legion of Merit and rise to captain.

Capt. Yarnell, whose final duty post was North Island Naval Air Station, died May 26 at his Coronado home. He was 82. The cause of death was congestive heart failure, said his wife, Kathryn.

After serving as a flight instructor in Miami, Capt. Yarnell was transferred to a bombing squadron and flew missions in the Atlantic and Pacific. In 1945, while assigned to the aircraft carrier Bennington, he took part in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns and strikes on the Japanese mainland. "He loved to fly, and everything he did in the Navy involved flying," his wife said. The Korean War found Capt. Yarnell in the Mediterranean aboard the aircraft carrier Leyte. He also had been attached as an assistant operations officer to Air Anti-Submarine Squadron 37 and assigned to the Western Pacific aboard the carriers Philippine Sea and Yorktown. From 1960 to 1962, he served as executive officer of the carrier Oriskany.

When he retired from active duty at 52, Capt. Yarnell joined a partner, William Davis, in buying and rehabilitating small homes in East San Diego. He would sell the homes to first-time buyers at below-market prices, requiring no down payment. "It worked well, because the buyers took pride in their homes and built up equity," his wife said. "He took great pleasure in that." In the early 1980s, Capt. Yarnell took up pottery as a hobby and designed pots for flower arranging and other uses. He built a studio on his Coronado property and developed his own glazes.

A surgery performed in 1985 to loosen pinched nerves in his neck left him with restricted mobility in his arms and caused other complications. He was forced to give up pottery. "Doctors only gave him about seven years to live, and he amazed everybody," his wife said. "He didn't complain; he was determined to get on with life."

Capt. Yarnell bought 11 acres in the Lakeside area in 1986, converting it into a horse-boarding facility known as Hazy Meadow Ranch. Today, his daughter, Linda Yarnell Hayes, boards about 70 horses there. As a member of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego, Capt. Yarnell was instrumental in plans to create a memorial wall to honor deceased members of the congregation. The 9-foot-tall, 40-foot-long wall was created in 1979 by ceramists Rhoda Lopez and Gerald Thiebolt.

Capt. Yarnell, who bought his Coronado home in 1953, was born in Little River, Kan. He was a graduate of George Washington University and previously attended Pasadena City College, the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the University of Wichita (Wichita State University).

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Kathryn; and daughter, Linda Yarnell Hayes of Lakeside.

A memorial service/celebration of life is scheduled for 3 p.m. June 23 at Hazy Meadow Ranch, Lakeside.

Obituary for Mordecai Yarnall

Source: "Death Notice", Poulson's American Daily Advertiser, Philadelphia, Penn.; publication date: Aug. 9, 1808.

DIED, at Wheeling, Virginia, on the 16th of the seventh month (July) Mordecai Yarnall, aged 24. The deceased member of the house of Cornthwait and Yarnall, was an esteemed member of the society of Friends--a splendid merchant, and an enlightened and useful citizen.

M.Y. was a native of Pennsylvania, from the metropolis of which state, about 2 years since, he moved to this city. A short residence amongst us, served to show the great extent of mercantile knowledge, the brilliant memory requirements, the true amiableness of character, the rigid integrity, and the unfeigned piety of the departed. In this short season, consumption laid her waxing hand upon him; to regain his health, if the Amighty should so ordain, he essayed to make the western tour.--But when the Omnipotent Judge, who rules the universe, shall have passed the sentence of death, nothing can arrest it. Nor was our friend ever taken by surprize or terrified at the approach of death. He had been enabled, in a good measure, to withdraw his affections from this world. Although to a mind like his stored with useful knowledge, and naturally cheerful, this world affords many and powerful attractions; yet its exquisite sensibility often "cloathed him in slackcloth," and enabled him less reluctantly to meet the summons which has deprived his numerous friends and associates of a worthy and profitable companion.

Obituary for Richard Keyte Yarnall.

Source: J. C. Loudon, The Gardeners Magazine, Longman, Rees, Orome, Brown and Green, 1826, v. 1; Article XII Obituary; pp. 228-229.

Dies at Knowlesley Hall, near Prescot, Mr. Richard Keyte Yarnall, twenty-nine years and nine months gardener there. Mr. Yarnall was born at Ebrington, in Gloucestershire, on the 20th Sept. 1752; he was educated at the free school of Campden, and served his apprenticeship to his uncle, then gardener at Coombe Abbey, Warwickshire. He then went as a journeyman to Hampton Court Gardens, at that time under the celebrated landscape Gardener, Mr. Brown. At the age of twenty-two he was engaged as gardener to the Earl of Waldegrave, at Navestock, Essex, where he lived sixteen years, till his Lordship's death. He next was engaged by the Earl of Shrewsbury, for the gardens at Heythorpe, in Oxfordshire; but being solicited by the Countess of Waldegrave to return to Navestock, he did so, and remained till the death of young Lord Waldegrave. After this event, her Ladyship entirely gave up the gardens, and Mr. Yarnall, in May, 1796, became gardener to the Earl of Derby, at Knowlesley, where he remained till he died, on the 19th of February last, in his seventy-fourth year. [died Feb. 19, 1826]

As a man, Mr. Yarnall was respected by his fellow servants, and his employers; and as a gardener he gave the highest satisfaction. We first called at Knowlesley Gardens, in July, 1805, and then observed in a cucumber-house, heated by steam, the plants trained like vines on a trellis, close under the glass, and a large crop of fruit hanging from them. This house, the mode of heating by steam, and of training the plants close to the glass, was the invention of Mr. Butler, Mr. Yarnall's predecessor. We again called at Knowlesley, in Feb. 1819, on the day of the burial of George the Third, and saw the same cucumber-house in full bearing as before, and also twenty-one cucumbers cut from it that morning, to be packed up and sent to the family at the Oaks in Kent. If we are correct in our recollection, Mr. Yarnall then told us, that there had been a crop of cucumbers hanging in that house, without any interruption farther than that of a month or two in summer, when they were abundant in the frames, for twenty-five years.

The greatest humanity and kindness was shown to Mr. Yarnall, in his last illness, by his noble mistress and master; who rather than hurt the worthy man's feelings by superannuating him, or appointing his successor during his life-time, chose to submit to various privations, and irregularities of management, the inevitable consequence of the want of an active superintendant.

Mr. Yarnall had a son, who was gardener to Lord Vernon, at Sudbury, in Derbyshire, who died some years ago, and left a family of young daughters.
