Hazel I. (Yarnell) Baker

Hazel I. Baker, 92, of 129 Academy St., Cooperstown, Pennsylvania, died at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005, in the Oil City Presbyterian Home.

Born Nov. 6, 1912, in Hannaville, Penn. she was the daughter of the Rev. Charles A. Yarnell and Lena L. (Parker) Yarnell.

Mrs. Baker worked as a practical nurse at the Franklin Hospital from 1954 to 1959 and was a custodian at Cooperstown School from 1959 to 1981, retiring at age 72. She was affiliated with her son in Baker Auction Co. until 1994.

Mrs. Baker was a member of the Evangelistic Tabernacle in Cooperstown and belonged to the adult Bible class of the church. She was a charter member of the Sugar Creek Grange. Mrs. Baker was well remembered for her homemade pies, loved to quilt, work in her garden, cook and can. She received special recognition from the Cooperstown PTA for her many years of special interest service and also from Valley Grove School District for 20 years of service at Cooperstown Elementary School.

Mrs. Baker was married June 29, 1935, to George B. Baker, who preceded her in death May 24, 1963. She and her husband were well-known in Cooperstown for their farm, truck gardening and curb market.

Surviving are one son, Charles D. Baker and wife, Carol, of Franklin; two grandchildren, Danny M. Baker and wife, Rebecca, of Union City and Denise J. Irwin and husband, Jerry, of Plumer; two great-grandchildren, Aaron and Emily Tobin of Plumer; four stepgrandchildren, Jamie Hepler of Plumer, Juli Morrison of Oil City and Jodi Webster and James T. Morrison, both of Franklin; and several step-great-grandchildren.

She also is survived by a brother, Earl W. Yarnell and wife, Mildred, of Brooksville, Fla.; two nephews, David Yarnell of New Castle and Robert Yarnell of New Guinea; a special nephew, Duane Boughner and wife, Kay, of Long Beach, Calif.; a former daughter-in-law, Connie Baker of Oil City; and special friends, Diana and Dave Sparling and family of Cooperstown.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Yarnell Greenlee; and three stepmothers, Clara Boyd, Clara Daugherty and Sara Conrad.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Joseph Martin, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Cooperstown, officiating. Interment will be in the Cooperstown Cemetery.
