II. VOCATIONAL SERVICE
Projects
*YES 1 (Young Environment Stewards - Training of Trainers) |
Project substance |
Re-valuing life by the realization that man’s survival depends on nature as nature provides everything we need. This survival depends on maintaining the complexity and interrelatedness of nature. This realization would only come from an understanding of nature through learning and education, hence, this Training of Trainers (TOT) echoes the call for environmental stewardship among youth leaders.
Project impact |
Through this training course the youth are encouraged to become leaders and stewards of the environment. They learn to embrace a fuller share in the responsibility and concern for maintaining nature for the sake of future generations. This is the key to sustainable development.
No. of beneficiaries |
This first batch of TOT (Training for Trainers) for the year is composed of 15 youth leaders from different organizations in UPLB and Los Baños. A ripple effect is expected to be created by these student leaders who echo the modules to their respective organizations and target beneficiary communities.
At the end of the TOT, a major activity, dubbed as “Oplan Alagaan Molawin Creek”, will be launched to spearhead the cleanup and maintenance of Molawin Creek, a major water resource that runs through UPLB and Los Baños.
By July 1, 2007, the club will be ready to undertake a district-wide activity in support of DGE Rose Celis’ Save Mother Earth project through the cleaning of waterways in every town and city in RID 3820, coupled with a massive tree planting activity in RY 2007-2008.
As District Chair for Environmental Protection Area 1, RCLB Makiling will extend this YES Module to the other clubs of RID 3820 and other districts as well.
*YES 2 (Young Entrepreneur Savers) |
This is another youth-centered project that aims to help develop business students from different schools become good entrepreneurs. Initially, around 20 students of entrepreneurship and HRM majors at Trace College attended two training seminars on ham and longganisa making conducted by the club in November and December 2006.
The plan is to mount a series of training on various livelihood topics to arm the youth with additional skills that would provide them options for venturing into business or employment. Other topics identified include crafts and accessory making, food preparation and handling, and candy making, to name a few. |
III. COMMUNITY SERVICE
Projects
1 |
Educational Concerns/ Literacy |
*Scholarship program |
RCLB MAKILING provided poor but talented youth with educational and development opportunities through a scholarship program. The program has supported several public high school and college students over the years who pursued degrees or vocational courses.
RCLB Makiling nurtured several high school students and was able to graduate a teacher in 2004. Another scholar, majoring in Math, is presently enrolled at the Laguna State Polytechnic College in Los Baños, Laguna.
*Adopt a day care (Paslit and Kiddie Care Learning Center): “Kwento, Laro, Talento”
Through “Kwento”, the volunteer teacher tackles any subject matter on environment, science discoveries, technologies, how things work, etc. This approach fills the gaps in knowledge and values acquisition that poor marginalized mothers cannot provide their children.
Through “Laro”, the volunteer teacher is able to help the kid develop physically through an avenue where the kid’s strengths and weaknesses are discovered and addressed accordingly.
Children’s talents can be developed by designing or sponsoring special programs, i.e., in painting, writing, playing musical instruments such as drum, singing, and acting, by equally talented volunteers, who are children of Rotarians. |
*“Santa Claus is coming to town |
Through “Santa Claus is coming to town”, kids at the Paslit and Kiddie Care Center in Putho-Tuntungin, Kibo Orphanage in Victoria, and Pinagpala Children’s Center in Calauan, were treated to gifts (books and stuffed toys), ice cream and sweets on Christmas.
2 |
Environment Protection |
*“Oplan Alagaan Molawin Creek” |
The “sustainability factor” in caring for the environment hinges on the involvement of the youth. There are about a hundred student organizations in UPLB (x 10 members/org) that could help nurture Molawin Creek, Mt. Makiling, and Laguna de Bay.
The Outdoor Recreation Education (ORE) is a continuing project with RC Makati-Legazpi done every summer for the past 10 years among students of selected high schools together with the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecoystem (MCME), College of Forestry and Natural Resources, UPLB.
Awareness on need for environment protection as students are given the opportunity to learn about the importance of taking care of the environment through field trips to Mt. Makiling, Laguna de Bay, PAG-ASA, Balara (dam), etc.
A batch of at least 50-60 high school students are trained every summer who become committed to do their part in environmental conservation. |
*Water Management: Clean Drinking Water for Paciano Elementary School, Brgy. Putho- Tuntungin, Los Baños, (for local matching grant with sister club)
The establishment of a clean drinking water source in the school would help prevent the spread of water-borne diseases among children.
This project will benefit the entire population of the school (about 700+).
3 |
Health and Hunger |
-Food production
*Halamanan sa Bakuran/Composting |
“Return to Basics” emphasizes the development of self-sufficiency among families in Purok 3 of Putho-Tuntungin in terms of food, clothing, and shelter. Now, these families faces the challenge of value-adding: producing enough food for the family, diversifying crops grown and raising more on already limited or marginalized land, with the extra produce being sold to enable them to buy other needs.
The Halamanan sa Bakuran will use every single space for planting vegetables, herbs, medicinal plants, and ornamentals. Soil will be enriched by compost (organic matter) to yield more. Planting materials will be diversified: herbs and spices, trees, vegetables, etc.
*Farm Family Five-Doe Farming Module
The 5-doe module provides milk for health and nutrition, with the excess sold as fresh milk or made into cheese or pastillas.
The project focuses on food sufficiency and income generation. One farm family module is the first model. An MOU with the owner of a 300-meter 2 lot has been executed for the establishment of the housing and the does.
-Livelihood
*Seminars |
The seminars on candle and polvoron making and the “Hamon ko sa Pasko, gawa ko” focus on income-generation for mothers and out-of-school youth. The training/demo were conducted upon the request of mothers of the Paslit Day Care and Kiddie Care Learning Center.
The livelihood component emphasizes simple, doable, home-based technologies that already have a market in local churches (candles), school canteens (polvoron), and homes (ham).
Livelihood seminars were also conducted on candle and polvoron making for mothers of kids enrolled in the Paslit Day Care and Kiddie Learning Center, while a lecture-demo on ham making was organized for women-participants to the DZLB school-on-the-air conducted by the club in 2005.
