Autumn in Tohoku

Contrary to most people's image of Japan as an ugly landscape of urban highrises, neon lights and traffic gridlock, there is still a lot of beautiful countryside to enjoy. Of course, when I say this, Hokkaido and parts of the Tohoku region comes to mind. I lived in Miyagi Prefecture for four years, and every autumn I was able to enjoy the fiery explosion of colours that transform most of the hills and mountains from their placid green to a sea of dazzling reds, oranges and yellows interlaced by the darker shades of the evergreen conifers. I know bushwalking is not everyone's cup of tea, but if you have a chance to be in Japan during the autumn months, I urge you to take a day out to explore local mountains and experience the splendour of the Japanese "kouyou".

I hope the photos below will give you an idea of what autumn is like in Miyagi and Yamagata. For my former partners-in-crime as Miyagi ALTs (Dave, Chris, Peter, Josh and Lance), these photos hopefully are great reminders of our time in Japan. Thanks for going bushwalking with me and in some cases like me, being the trailblazer ALT (the first ALT) in their local rural town.
