When you purchase Playstation 2 and open its blue box, you will get Playstation2 Console, one Dual Shock 2 Controller, one Audio Video (AV) cable and a plug, also you will find a manual, a warranty card and a disc driver for its DVD player. Just make sure, read the operating manual before using your console.

Note: You need to make sure that what Playstation 2 region you have before plugging into your electrical outlet at home, because each region comes with different voltages (ie, US PS2 is 110-120v, Australia PS2 is 220-240v).

What can I use PS2 for?
Playing PSX and PS2 games (CD formatted disc 650 Mega Bytes or DVD formatted disc, single layer 4.7 Giga Bytes), watching DVD movies and listening to CD Audio (.cda format). Unfortunately, Video CD (VCD) movies is not supported at the moment. But who knows it can be later on ;)

Since PS2 can play DVD games and movies, does it have region protection?

Yes. PS2 can play only particular DVD games and movies regions as following:

  1. PS2 US/NTSC plays Region 1 games, Region 0 and 1 movies.
  2. PS2 JAP/NTSC plays Region 2 games, Region 0 and 2 movies.
  3. PS2 ASIA/NTSC plays Region 2 and 3 games, Region 0 and 3 movies.
  4. PS2 AUS|NZ/PAL plays Region 4 games and Region 0 and 4 movies.

Hey, I have a Playsation (PSX) peripherals, can I use that for my new PS2?

Yes, for the most part like controller and memory card. This will insure 100% backward-compatibility. However please note that you can only save your PS2 games in your PS2's memory card (8 Mega Bytes) and also PSX games in PSX's memory card (1 Mega Bytes). The PlayStation Multitap does not work on the PlayStation 2.

Are accessories available for PS2 compatible on different PS2 models?

Yes, mostly the official ones. However, the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) for PS2, which can be added into expansion bay, is not compatible with all PS2 models. Currently it is compatible with JAP PS2 SCPH 10000, SCPH 15000 and SCPH 18000. Also, there are any other accessories from third party, which are not compatible for all PS2 models, such as game enhancers; GameShark2 and Action Replay2.

So PS2 has a separate HDD, what can it be used for?

HDD can be used for saving your games saves also for saving games memory, so the games which are compatible with HDD can have a faster loading time. HDD comes in internal and external models. Both of them have a built in ethernet card which can be used for online gaming.
