Generally, there are two ways creating CDR based backup games on your PS2 using CDR/W-ROM device; indirect/modified/patched and direct copies. Playing them on unmodified PS2, ie. Knife Trick Method, requires you to modified the games. The modification of the games is done by using games' patches. In addition, this is also usually required if you want to play EA games on your modified PS2 (PS2 modified using Neo2, Neo2.2, Neo2.5, Origa, etc).

This tutorial will show you how to create both direct and indirect backup copies. Before we start, you will need the followings:

  1. CDR/W-ROM Drive.
  2. Blank CDR media, (I use Verbatim Data Life Plus or Mitsui Gold 700MB)
  3. CDRWin V3.8 or above / CloneCD
  4. Paradox PPF O Matic PPF Patcher/AddZer0 FrontEnd
  5. Winzip or any extractor softwares.
  6. At least 800MB free space of local hard drive.
  7. The Patch Pack, (contains the patch for the game you want to patch).

[PART 1 - Extracting ISO Image to Your Local Drive]

  1. Insert your original game into CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, (ie. I use FIFA2001).
  2. Then execute your CDRWin burning software.
  3. Click on Extract Disc/Tracks/Sectors button, (It is located on the middle on the first row).
  4. Extract Mode: Choose Disc Image/Cuesheet.
  5. CD Reader: Choose CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, where you put the original game, is, (ie. Mine is Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD105F, but usually it is automatically selected).
  6. Image Filename: Choose a directory and create a file name, (ie. C:\FIFA2001\fifa2k1_a - To avoid confusion, you can use any letter to differenciate between the patched and unpathed files).
  7. Reading Options: Uncheck RAW, CD+G, CD-TEXT, MCN/ISRC.
  8. Error Recovery: Choose Ignore.
  9. Jitter Control: Choose Disable.
  10. Subcode Analysis: Choose Auto.
  11. Data Speed: Choose your speed, (I usually leave it default mode, which is MAX).
  12. Audio Speed: Choose your speed, (Same as above).
  13. Read retry count: put any numbers from 2-10.
  14. Subcode Threshold: Leave it default, which is 300.
  15. Click on Start button to extract the image files to your local hard drive. It will take a while depending on the speed you chose previously.
  16. When it's done, you can close your CDRWin.

[PART 2 - Patching ISO Image]:
Now, you should have two image files on your local hard drive, which are a ".bin" and a ".cue", (Mine is in C:\FIFA2001\ - the files are fifa2k1_a.bin and fifa2k1_a.cue).

Using PPF 0 Matic:

  1. Find your EA Pack that contains the games patch.
  2. Extract it to where you create ".bin" and ".cue" files, (ie. I extract the files into C:\FIFA2001\).
  3. Execute PPF O Matic.
  4. PPF-File: Click on disk image and select your ".ppf" PAL patch from where you recently extracted to, (ie. Mine is aRR_f2k1p.pff).
  5. Bin File: Click on disk image and select the ".bin" file that previously extracted using CDRWin, (ie. Mine is in C:\FIFA2001\fifa2k1_a.bin).
  6. Click on Apply button.
  7. After successfully applied, close PPF O Matic.

Using AddZero FrontEnd:

  1. Find your Game Pack that contains the game patch.
  2. Extract it to where you create ".bin" and ".cue" files, (ie. I extract the files into C:\FIFA2001\).
  3. Open AddZer0 FrontEnd.
  4. Input Image: Browse for your input file.
  5. Output Image: for the output file.
  6. Option: Choose the type of patching you want to apply to your image.
Auto Mode; Converts the current Input Image to a 2048 ISO. The image is then patched, placing system.cnf at LBA 12231.
Normal Mode; If you select this mode, type the LBA of the closest file to LBA 12231 into the text box, (Requires ISO Buster). This will move this file to 12232 and place the system.cnf at 12231.
Patcher Mode; It takes the system.cnf file and places it at 12231. This will possibly corrupt data of the image which cause problems while playing the game. Therefore this mode is not recommended.
  7. After that, click on Convert button.
  8. Close AddZero FrontEnd after finish converting.

[Final Part - Burning The Patched ".bin" using CDRWin]

  1. Execute CDRWin again.
  2. Click on Record Disc button, (It is located on first row and coloum).
  3. CDROM Recoder: Choose your CDR Device, (It is automatically selected).
  4. Recording Options: Check Test Mode to be safe and leave the others unchecked. For Speed; Choose your burning speed (Preferably 2x-4x).
  5. Click on Load Cuesheet button, then choose your ".cue" file from your local hard drive (ie. Mine is located on C:\FIFA2001\fifa2k1_a.cue - Remember?)
  6. After compiling Cuesheet, click on Start Recording button.
  7. Finish! Hooray... ;)
